romualdo Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Anyone have a copy of this 78? (Birdland Bounce/Leapin' In London) If so they may be able to assist me with more details from this Esquire UK Johnny Dankworth session (July 29, 1950) The BN 78's often had the musicians details printed on the labels The Lord Discography & UK jazz sites do not mention these tracks were there alternate names for these? also there are other titles from this session The rear of the 10" (5019) has no musician/track details Quote
JohnS Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) The BN discography lists, Jimmy Deucher, Eddie Harvey, Dankworth, Don Rendell, Bill LeSage, Eric Dawson and Tony Kinsey. Four titles are listed. These plus Tea for Two and Cherokee on BN 1612. Hope that helps. Edited August 16, 2010 by JohnS Quote
brownie Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 The Lord Discography lists that July 29, 1950 session by Johnny Dankworth with these four titles, as appearing on Esquire (BN titles are obviously variations): - Sam's Song - The Haunted Ballroom Theme - Seven not out (Tea for me) - Cherokee Quote
romualdo Posted August 17, 2010 Author Report Posted August 17, 2010 I think I may have sorted out this anomaly The Blue Note discography gives this info Jimmy Deuchar (tp) Eddie Harvey (tb) Johnny Dankworth (as) Don Rendell (ts) Bill LeSage (p) Eric Dawson (b) Tony Kinsey (d) London, England, July 29, 1950 SSS7-126 Birdland Bounce BN 1611 SSS7-127 Leapin' In London - 116 Tea For Me Bn 1612 117 Cherokee - note that the matrix numbers are different between the first two & the latter two I did a search via matrix # through the Lord Discography & came up with a different session Melody Maker's All Stars Kenny Baker (tp) Gordon Langhorn (tb) Ronnie Chamberlain, Henry MacKenzie (cl) Johnny Dankworth (as) Ronnie Scott (ts) Dave Shand (bs) Victor Feldman (vib) Ivor Mairants (g) Charlie short (b) Jack Parnell (d) London, February 3, 1951 SSS-7-126 Brand's Essence Esquire (E)10-115, S-321 SSS-7-127 Marshall's Plan (ds out) - - I suspect that these are the alternate titles for BN 78 1611 - The BN discography may be a bit out here as it looks like we have two separate sessions It would be interesting to see who are the musicians listed on the 78 label ANYONE OUT THERE WITH A COPY OF THE 78!!!! Bluerein Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Hello, This is the line-up for the first side of the 78: Side A (BN-126E) Birdland Bounce Personel: Kenny Baker (ts), Gordon Longhorn (tb), Henry Mackenzie (cl), Ronnie Chamberlain (as), Johnny Dankworth (as), Ronnie Scott (ts), Victor Feldman (vibes), Ralph Sharon (piano), Ivor Mairants (guit.), Charlie Short (bass), Jack Parnell (drums) See scan. I don't have side 2 but I'm working on that one too. Cheers, Reinier Quote
romualdo Posted August 18, 2010 Author Report Posted August 18, 2010 Reinier many thanks for the info/scan that does confirm my findings that these two titles are from a different session not listed in the Blue Note Discography (1988 edn - don't have the most recent version - maybe it has been corrected?) SSS-7-126 Birdland Bounce (US title - BN 1611) = Brand's Essence (UK title - Esquire 10-115) SSS-7-127 Leapin' In London (US title - BN 1611) = Marshall's Plan (UK title - Esquire 10-115) Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 The Blue Note2001 edition book mentions only "leased from Esquire label" with no more information. Good luck! Claude Quote
Bluerein Posted August 22, 2010 Report Posted August 22, 2010 Indeed the Ruppli/Cuscuna book is wrong about this! Quote
