BeBop Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 I've got work in Northern Florida before long here - November-ish. Anything worth working into my plans - jazz? cool neighborhoods? Quick search here suggests that Tallahassee had the Adderleys and Jacksonville has an NFL team and speeding tickets. Record Store Day Venues? Nil. Quote
Spontooneous Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Tallahassee's got Free For All Paul -- what more could you want? Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Paul would be the one with fresh knowledge of Tallahassee. There is a legit blues club outside of town, I wish I had known about it when I lived there. Can't for the life of me think of the name though ... Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 That's it - and I see in their archive that our own Greg Nagy has played there. Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Doesn't sound like you'll be in town that long but I'd highly recommend Reba Russell in December. Powerful blues singer like Janiva but more of a traditionalist. Quote
BeBop Posted September 1, 2010 Author Report Posted September 1, 2010 Thanks for the tip on Reba Russell. With my schedule, who knows?! I could still be around when Santa Claus arrives. Quote
Free For All Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Too bad you won't be here on October 23rd- I'm playing at a local club with the FSU faculty rhythm section and fellow trombonist John Fedchock (who will be in town to perform with the FSU big band). There are actually a couple clubs here now- one called B Sharp's (where I'm playing) which is run by Clarence Seay and his wife Gerry. Clarence is a bassist who's played with Billy Harper, among others. Also, there's a new place called the High Five that just opened. Things are definitely better than they were when I moved here. I just went to the Bradfordville Blues Club a couple weeks ago- glad I used my Garmin to find it, it's literally in the middle of nowhere. Overall, though, not a lot going on either here or in J'ville. Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 Wow - two clubs booking jazz? That's miles ahead of where it was in the mid-90s when I was there. To answer your other question - there are no neighborhoods in Tallahassee except in the residential sense. And culture has to be brought in by FSU or FAMU, so it depends on what may be scheduled for the fall semester as far as that goes. On the other hand, by December temperatures should have cooled down pretty nicely. You might even see lows in the 50s and highs around 70-75, give or take. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 That's it - and I see in their archive that our own Greg Nagy has played there. Yep, we played there in February (Greg and me and the band) and I also played there in May with Janiva. Cool place. Quote
JazzBluesFlorida Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 Bradfordville Blues Club & B-Sharps Jazz Cafe may be lonely, but they are top-of-the-line in their presentations of their respective genres. Try the NW Florida Music Listing page at our site, www.JazzBluesFlorida.com for their details and what else is happening around the area. See you at both places 9/11! Charlie Quote
BERIGAN Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 Lived in Jacksonville for 10 years, don't exactly remember it being a jazz town at all, but that was a long time ago.... but, it's not that far(Hour drive or les) from St. Augustine, which is a pretty darned cool city on the ocean, if you haven't been there before....It's still cool even if you have been there before.
