I've just received an email from Mosaic/True Blue promoting Nessa Records' new release Indian Summer by Eddie Johnson.

A beautiful 1981 session by this underrated big-toned Chicago tenor man, a veteran of the Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald orchestras. His quintet here includes trumpeter Paul Serrano, pianist John Young, bassist Eddie De Haas and drummer George Hughes. They dig into pieces by Ellington, Benny Carter, Neal Hefti and others with swing, verve and lyricism. On CD for the first time, the album includes a previously unissued "I'm Old Fashioned".

Congrats Chuck!

Hey GA - better not promote that CD too much or you'll be accused of "lacking objectivity", or of being a "friend of Chuck's," or some such nonsense. We must be very careful here, you know, impartial and all. We'd best make sure that all the Amazon reviews average out at 3 stars.

BTW, I have the CD and really dig it - especially Eddie's great tenor sound.

Here's one listener's "take",before he knew of the reissue (i.e., based on the LP.)

Actually, that said, shouldn't this be in the Reissues subforum, rather than New Releases?

Wherever this thread should be, to my ears the CD sounds better than the LP.

hmm.. you have me wondering , I love the LP and thought it sounded pretty good, ...

I liked the LP, but imo Chuck improved the sound when he did the CD. Eddie Johnson is more integrated with the sound of the rest of the group and the sound of the drums is improved on the CD. Just my opinion. There's also an extra track which might make getting the CD worthwhile also.

Thanks for this information. But I try to resist the temptation to buy for improved sound and bonus tracks. If I didn't, I'd have 84 copies of "Kind of Blue".

(That's not a comment about Messrs. Nessa, or Johnson, of course.)
