B. Goren. Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 What a nice surprise was it to discover that two of my favorite musicians have recorded together! Very enjoyable playing of both musicians. I can recommend without any hesitation especially if you like the duet format. AAJ review. Quote
Unk Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 Yes, I've been trying to obtain a copy and hope to soon. Quote
Leeway Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 I very much like the Kuhn brothers' 1968 album, IMPRESSIONS OF NEW YORK, on Impulse!, with Jimmy Garrison and Aldo Romano. One hears in it the early strains of Euro post-bop and even free jazz. Quite interesting. I've not been a fan f Joachim, but I like Rolf's clarinet playing. I was fortunate to see him in NYC not too long ago in the Jazzwerkstatt Festival. He has some good albums on that label. I actually am a fan of Shepp, but I much prefer his "fire music" phase; the later performances are quite variable. He can be downright dull, or at least flat, sometimes. Anyway, I'll have to check clips before I decide to purchase, but the album does look interesting. Might have been cool to have included Rolf on the album! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 Rolf and Joachim make a good pair. I've not followed either of their recent work too much, though most of the stuff from the '60s and '70s is solid to excellent. Joachim's BYGs and MPS LPs are great. You should try to check out "Transfiguration," which is Rolf & Joachim plus Aldo Romano, Beb Guerin and Karl Berger. It's a doozy. As for Shepp, though I don't really buy too many of his more recent discs, it's been a treat to see him perform in the past decade. I didn't like his singing until I actually saw him do it (with Amina Myers and Cameron Brown). Fantastic. Quote
