jostber Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 From today in AAJ: Albert Ayler - Knocking On The Door of Astral Jazz http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=40674 Is that Stockholm, Berlin 1966 a good one? Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I always wonder - they continually cite "outrage" at his playing, but I've never seen actual documentation of such. Quote
JSngry Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 It's just like some people view all profanity as an expression of anger or frustration, never an expression of happiness. Quote
JSngry Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 It's like, if it's "intense" then it's got to be "angry" or some such. And god forbid you ever be "loud". That's just crude! Quote
cih Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 (edited) But cause outrage they did. "The sound was so different, so rare and raw," wrote the poet Ted Joans after hearing Ayler for the first time, "like screaming the word 'FUCK' in Saint Patrick's Cathedral on Easter Sunday." in any case, certainly personal 'outrage' would be far from what Ted Joans - the "only Afro-American surrealist" - had in mind by this statement! His analogy was clearly meant to indicate a joyful/primal release.. Amiri bakara says something similar in the Revenant box iirc, I mean about the initial shock Edited to add a diagonal line and the word primal Edited November 7, 2011 by cih Quote
JSngry Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Oh, I'm sorry, I though Alan was talking about outrage in his playing, not at it. My eyes and brain no longer work in conjuction on a predictably regular basis, Quote
cih Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 although what you said made perfect sense to me anyway - my brain must be equally scrambled :eye: Quote
JSngry Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Brains w/scrambled eggs are quite tasty. Scrambled brains, otoh... Quote
