brownie
Sad to learn that George Whitman who ran the Shakespeare and Company bookstore died. He was a neighborhood fixture. A most generous and warm person. I spent hours in his bookstore and still went past it almost daily. He died on Wednesday, two days before his 98th birthday! Obituary in The Washington Post today. Tom Storer
His daughter has been running the shop for a while, and she does a fine job, arguably better than her father! She hosts readings and is passionately involved with the publishing world, seeming to know everyone and be on top of all the latest developments. So the place is in good hands. Good for George Whitman to have produced a chip off the old block.
paul secor
I've never been to Shakespeare and Company (nor to Paris, for that matter), but I've read about the history of the shop and seen it in photographs and film. Always a sad thing when a dedicated bookseller leaves us.
