Big Wheel Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I'm doing some research, and I was looking through this Blakey discography when I noticed that certain players have annotations next to their names if they only play on some of the tunes at a session. Sometimes it's a comma, sometimes it's a hyphen, and sometimes it's a slash. For example, Jackie McLean (as- 1, 2, 4), Lee Morgan (tpt- 4/7). Does this mean that Lee plays on tracks 4 through 7--4, 5, 6, and 7? Or is it something else? Quote
JSngry Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 It means what you think it does, that Lee plays on tracks 4 through 7. A hyphen could also be used. Quote
Big Wheel Posted January 20, 2004 Author Report Posted January 20, 2004 Ok, got another question then: The session I'm researching is Donald Byrd's Byrd's Eye View, on Transition. The Blakey discography says that Joe Gordon plays on tracks 3-6. But the AMG review says that Gordon's only on two tracks on this session. Who's right? Quote
brownie Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 The original booklet to that rare Transition original (one of my treasures) lists Joe Gordon as playing on the following tracks: - Doug's Blues (Gordon plays the second oif the three trumpet solos), - El Sino (Byrd solos first, then Gordon, same order for the following shorter trumpet solos), - Hank's Tune (Gordon has the first trumpet solo). That's a superb date! Have enjoyed it this for decades. Quote
