Pete C Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) Looks like another one that's taking a liberal interpretation of the word "jazz". They've always been a very eclectic festival; when they were in The Hague they had 14 concurrent stages and more than half were definitely jazz of all varieties. I went three times from 1997-2000, and to give an idea of the range of acts, a selected list of what I saw were: Henry Threadgill, Han Bennink in multiple groups, Jeanne Lee with Waldron Trio, Louis Sclavis, Mulgrew Miller & NHOP, Nicholas Payton, Tyner, Joe Henderson, N.G. La Banda, Larry Harlow, Herbie Hancock, Steve Winwood, Buddy Guy, Santana, Youssou N'Dour, Konitz/Haden/Bley, Solal/Peacock/Motian, Earth, Wind & Fire, King Crimson, Jorge Ben, Bobby Previte, Bud Shank, George Coleman, Metropole Orchestra with Konitz... you get the idea... Pete C Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 the program in only a few minutes... Bill, have you ever been there? Cyril, have you been since they're in Rotterdam? I'm wondering how the venues compare. I loved staying by the beach in Scheveningen, not to mention trying to pronounced it. Quote

And it's not far from Sgeveningen too. Quote

I just went on what was on their home page. Sounds like what people said about Cheltenham this year. In contrast, recall what was recently posted about the Detroit festival. Pete C Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 (edited) And it's not far from Sgeveningen too. I don't get it, except for the fact that both spellings might be pronounced the same way? Maybe I'll have to try Rotterdam some day. I only visited once as a day trip. However, this proofreader was asleep at the wheel when I said "trying to pronounced it"! Scheveningen: Dutch pronunciation = sxevənɪgən or Sgeveningen. Every time I try to say it I end up splattering people's face with spittle ! I last went to this festival in 2005 (or was it 2006?). There's significantly more 'jazz' here than at Cheltenham with this lineup but I have to say that compared with 2005 it looks a bit diluted. General trend I guess. The highlight for me of that particular year was Yusef Lateef with the Belmondo Brothers, plus seeing James Moody with a Slide Hampton-led Gillespie Reunnion Big band. The Rotterdam venue is on a huge scale, although the cowd rushes between stages can be a bit hair-raising (especially when they are emptying out the stages after popular acts).
