MartyJazz Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 LP or CD? This question prompted me to look at my copy of the LP so that I could relate the following. Back around when EXPANSIONS was first issued, I was given a promo copy by a friend of a friend who lived in my neighborhood and who was fortunate to be reviewing newy issued LPs for either BillBoard or Cashbox magazines, I forget which. Anyway, his concise review on the back of the LP states: "Nothing special" and it is signed "EVL". As I know that at that time he was heavily into hard rock, I was grateful for his ignorance of what constituted a great jazz album, as I was able to receive quite a few promo jazz LPs from him. Anyway "EVL" did very well himself in later years, writing God knows how many ninja adventure novels as Eric Van Lustbader. BTW, I like this album so much, I also picked up the CD when it first came out. Those who have lived in the metropolitan New York area for a long time, must recall that the theme song beginning the nightly jazz show at Columbia University's WKCR was, for many years (maybe this is still so?) I have never seen one and can't vouch for the quality. The cost is £5 plus postage from the supplier (who is not me). This guy has other applause CDs such as the two rare and undesirable Turrentines. I don't know anything about Applause CD issues. Quote

The sound quality is so-so, but the music is very good. I wonder if it is from these Applause guys you mention, David Ayers. I'll take a look at it when I get home. Quote
Claude Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 If the Applause CDs are made from the same tapes that Liberty used in the early 90's to release some Blue Note CDs, I would avoid them. I had a Liberty reissue CD of "Expansions" and returned it after hearing the first 30 seconds. It sounded like a worn cassette. The Applause releases can of course be different, but both companies were Blue Note licensees in the 70s, so they probably had tape copies used fro LP production. Applause reissues: Reissues under license in the mid and late 70's of sessions from the early 60's through early 70's. The jackets are usually yellow, with the front displaying simplified copies of the original artwork, usually in a one or two color approximation, with a yellow border or background. The back has original liner notes with black lettering on the yellow jacket, with a "licensed by United Artists" notation. However, I did previously own an Applause copy of Hutcherson's STICK-UP. Hated the sound on that one and got the regular Blue Note issue soon after. Marty B) Quote
