alocispepraluger102 Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) only in the u.s.------------whom would you recommend as worthy? link .....But considering the MacArthur program, established since in 1981 has included jazz-related musicians frequently since 1988 (starting with Ran Blake and Max Roach, continuing with George Russell, Ali Akbar Khan, Gunther Schuller, Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Ornette Coleman, Ken Vandermark, George E. Lewis, Edgar Meyer — with whom Chris Thile has collaborated — Reginald Robinson, Regina Carter, John Zorn, Corey Harris, Miguel Zenon, Jason Moran and Dafnis Prieto), and that the fellowships are not for past works but rather investments in the artists and hence their art forms’ futures, the absence this year is disappointing........ Blue Train Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) Those who I know who have won. Some of them make no sense when you consider whom they could have been chosen instead. Max Roach 1988 Ran Blake 1988 Gunther Schuller 1991 Cecil Taylor 1991 Stanley Crouch 1993 (No comment.) Ornette Coleman 1994 Anthony Braxton 1994 Ken Vandermark 1999 George E. Lewis 2002 Regina Carter 2006 John Zorn 2006 Jason Moran 2010 Dafnis Prieto 2011 Edited October 3, 2012 by Blue Train Quote

colinmce Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 I noticed but figure it's OK to take a year off. Glad to see Junot Diaz and Dinaw Mingetsu get a prize. Quote
Blue Train Posted October 3, 2012 Report Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) Some of those that come to mind. Some are so obvious it's actually embarrassing when you consider half of those that won and they haven't. Sonny Rollins Roscoe Mitchel Wayne Shorter Mcoy Tyner Lee Konitz Andrew Cyrille Hamid Drake Dave Holland Herbie Hankcock (yeah, he least of all needs the money and really hasn't been relevant with regards to Jazz in a long time, but still.) Randy Weston Charles Tolliver Muhal Richard Abrams Joe Lovano Dave Douglas Dee Dee Bridgewater Edited October 3, 2012 by Blue Train Quote
