Now, you want to talk about inflamed spouses..I knew a guy who was going through a divorce who came home one day to find all the gas outlets in his house turned on and an open pack of matches on his drum kit. That fucked him up. Quit playing for a good while, quit all his bad habits, and came back to playing. But he was never the same. I'd wager that he'd have preferred just getting ripped off.

It all sucks, but at least if you know (or are pretty sure you know) who did it, you can have some sort of twisted rationale for why it happened. But no matter what, you feel violated in a way that an ordinary burglary (had that happen, too) doesn't feel like.

Your instrument knows things about you that nobody else does. And it's probably better that way.

""Randomness is a bitch sometimes.""

spike wilner , of smalls, bragged the other evening that he hadn't broken a piano string in 25 years.

tonight he sat down at the steinway, played for less than a minute and the 6th g string broke, really broke.

the club was wired for an expensive recording session at 9 tonight.

is it randomness?

I loaned my mid-40s Buescher bari sax - a horn with a beautiful sound - to a friend for a gig. I should have known better - he had lost his driver's license for alcohol-related reasons. So he walked the mile or so from his house to the gig. Well, apparently he enjoyed a few cocktails at the gig. He left for home about 2:30 AM and "got tired" after a short distance, so he sat down to "rest." He passed out, woke up about 5:30 AM and, of course, the horn was gone. I was informed that afternoon by email - the subject line read "I lost your horn last night."

For multiple reasons, some not related to the above, we are no longer friends.

The dude walked a mile to a gig carrying a bari?

Geez, I'd need a drink or two to even contemplate doing that.

One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't things.

But definitely damned if you lose a horn like that, and irrevocably damned for sending an email like that, especially with that subject line.

Is this guy still alive? If so, how? Why?

He's a very talented saxophone player - in some ways, much better that me. He used to sit in with bands I was in when he was 15, and it was apparent that he was going to be really good. He's got no social skills, though, and has burned a few bridges since reaching adulthood. I don't hate him, and wish him well, but I'm done with him.
