Hardbopjazz Posted January 16, 2013 Report Posted January 16, 2013 I've been going through a box of CDs that belong to my father when he was alive. My mother decided after 13 years to get rid of much of everything, so I took the music. Mostly classical/opera. I came across one CD of Gershwin playing his compositions to a piano roll. When he played jazz, he could swing. Anyone else ever heard any of these piano rolls? Quote

I had the Nonesuch CD, but I think the ex-wife got it. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 19, 2013 Author Report Posted January 19, 2013 It is the Nonesuch CD. Quote
colinmce Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I love that Nonesuch CD. The obscure "So Am I" is a true highlight. Quote
Jim R Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I love that Nonesuch CD. Me too. I bought it some time in the 90's, and I used to pull it out for special family occasions, like when we'd have my Mom over to the house (she's a pianist and a Gershwin fan). I haven't played it for quite awhile... need to remedy that (thanks for the reminder). Quote
Steve Gray Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I have this CD http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gershwin-Orchestral-Works-George/dp/B000025M4X/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_h__1 which features Gershwin playing Rhapsody In Blue with orchestral accompaniment Apparently Gershwin recorded a reduction of RIB for solo piano on a piano roll For this recording, someone had to fill in the holes on the roll that represented the 'accompaniment' leaving only the solo part. I'm glad I didn't have that job. Quote
