Hardbopjazz Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) At 92 there may not be many other chances to catch this giant. http://roulette.org/events/yusef-lateef-celebrating-75-years-of-music/ Edited April 6, 2013 by Hardbopjazz Quote
six string Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 He should do a duo with Randy Weston. I'd probably fly to NYC to see that. The last time I saw him was about ten years ago at the Grace Cathedral in SF. It was superb. Quote
fasstrack Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 Yes, amazing human being. Hope he stays around for many more years. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 If you have the chance, thank the man. I dud, Quote
fasstrack Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 I did have the chance, Chuck, and did thank him. I was a young, naive kid in 1972 and approached Mr. Lateef with questions and for advice as he was getting ready to go to work at the Vanguard. He took the time to address my queries seriously and spend a few minutes passing on his wisdom. I never forgot it and at the 2004 IAJE conference I ran into him again and was able to thank him. He was so gracious he just about glowed. As I said he's a special artist and human being. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 6, 2013 Author Report Posted April 6, 2013 I can't wait to see this show. I will get there two hours early so I can be the first in the club. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 7, 2013 Author Report Posted April 7, 2013 The show was much different than I expected. Two pieces of improvisation and Lateef's poetry. I did enjoy it. Mr. Yusef is a very nice person. I asked for an autograph, and when my pen stopped writing, he insisted on finding someone with one that worked. Quote
