But conceptual artist Alyce Santoro is trying to save them, while simultaneously appealing to the fashion world and developing a whole new way of making music. To create the material she calls "sonic fabric," Santoro mixes strips of one-eighth inch audio tape with polyester fibers. The tape and polyester are woven together on a loom; appropriately, older sewing technology seems to work better on audio tape than more modern machines.
