Stereo AM

Sounds like an Oxymoron, but is there such an animal? I was for some reason scanning AM stations in my car and one you are listening to WXXX in stereo on the AM dial. I thought AM was just mono?

Yes, there is such a thing, and has been for a while now. I recall murmurs going back to the late 1960s(?), definitely by the late 70s.

My remembered timeline was a little off, but I do remember that by the time it came into any kind of "prominence" (and I use that word most advisedly), almost the only music you heard on AM was niche market, some how some way. Still is...which can be pretty fun while driving...but maybe not. I still try, though, because sometimes you get lucky.
