scooby Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Freejazzlessons.com published an article of mine about an exercise that I learned from Phil Woods many years ago:http://www.freejazzlessons.com/ear-training-chords-exercise/ Quote

page Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Hi Scooby, thank you so much for this exercise. I have been working on my ear training. I still find it difiiculted to identify chords and progressions. This will help me a lot. Regards, page Quote
David Posted February 18, 2014 Report Posted February 18, 2014 Thanks Scooby! While I am pretty good at identifying chord progressions, singing is a challenge! I am embarrassed at how off my guide tone was after even one modulation. Needless to say, I have never been good at transposing on the fly, and perhaps this exercise will help. Quote
scooby Posted February 19, 2014 Author Report Posted February 19, 2014 I love this exercise. As I say in the article, it is deceptively simple. It looks easy until you sing it with only one reference pitch and then check yourself at the end. The second exercise is even more challenging to get the modulations correct. Of course, as with most things, it gets easier with time and practice. Once you can do it with Autumn Leaves, try it on All The Things You Are, What Is This Thing Called Love, Have You Met Miss Jones, etc. It can become a great tool to learn tunes. Quote
