BillF Posted July 17, 2014 Report Posted July 17, 2014 Was very saddened to read today of the death of my old friend from Manchester University days, Jack Massarik. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/a-passionate-jazzman-jack-massarik-obituary-9608559.html Quote
Clunky Posted July 17, 2014 Report Posted July 17, 2014 I didn't know who he was or indeed just how long he'd been around but I always read his reviews if I came across them. He knew what he was taking about , which is more than can be said for some wannabe critics. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Sorry to hear this Bill. He was still writing reviews for 'Jazzwise' and The Standard until very recently. RIP. Certainly knew his bop/hard-bop, that's for sure. Quote
BillF Posted July 18, 2014 Author Report Posted July 18, 2014 Sorry to hear this Bill. He was still writing reviews for 'Jazzwise' and The Standard until very recently. RIP. Certainly knew his bop/hard-bop, that's for sure. We used to go to hear the Tubby Hayes Quartet with Terry Shannon, Jeff Clyne and Bill Eyden. It certainly left its mark. I also remember him playing the Parker "Lover Man" solo note for note on his alto as well as Jimmy Heath's "For Minors Only". The apprenticeship of a lifelong bopper! Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Looking at the picture of him in The Standard I'm sure I've seen him around - possibly at Pizza Express or Ronnie Scotts. Quote
