The modes of the major scale, with the associated Roman Numeral functionary designations =  (all examples use the C major scale).

  1. Ionian (I) - starts on first degree: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
  2. Dorain (ii) - starts on second degree: D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D
  3. Phrygian (iii) - starts on third degree: E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E
  4. Lydian (IV) - starts on fourth degree: F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F
  5. Mixoylydian (V) - starts on fifth degree: G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G
  6. Aeolian (vi) - starts on sixth degree: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A
  7. Lochrian (viiø7)- starts on seventh degree: B-C-D-E-F-G-A

That's just for traditional major scales, mind you.
