fasstrack
It's called Have Piano, Will Swing. Has anyone read this? Hod's a great player. I used to hear him in the 70's with Joe Puma at Gregory's and we played together in Marshall Brown's Wednesday ensemble. He probably has stories to tell, being a veteran. The book's for sale at his website www.hodobrien.com

fasstrack
He's a real swinger. Bebopper to his socks, to quote Phil Woods on Pepper Adams.
T.D.
Thanks for letting me know about this...looks very interesting. I first heard him on the Farmer/Suleiman/Byrd Three Trumpets album. Later, when I purchased his Reservoir albums, I was surprised to find it was the same guy still playing bop after all those years!
Justin V
I've only heard him on Ted Brown's Free Spirit and Rene Thomas' Guitar Groove and have enjoyed his playing on both, so I'll have to check out more of his work. I see that his I Hear a Rhapsody has the eighteen-year-old bassist Daryl Johns, who is the son of drummer Steve Johns. Daryl is making a name for himself; I saw him in Detroit with Greg Osby and Will Calhoun in September. Anyway, I bet O'Brien's book would be a good read. Not enough veteran jazz musicians have written autobiographies. Edited November 13, 2015 by Justin V
