Really like his Liszt recordings here .... but also the Schubert performances are decent to say the least ....

Something natural about his playing here. Brendel in his primetime ... he did made good recordings further in his career but also bad ones.

Found a rare and vauable boxset at triftstore yesterday. Bruno Walter, Erich Kleiber  Furtwangler, Adrian Boult, Carl Schuricht, Pierre Monteux and others here. This is a rare find. NP:

To me sort of narcissm/self-imposed legend status was gradually taking over .... he was an excellent pianist nevertheless ....

could be a reason also..  and what about exhaustion ? These guys had to perform for years and years.

Possibly .... he toured extensively in the 70`s .... and he didn`t cut loose with the then absorbing "classical business" like for instance Friedrich Gulda did ....

I'm continuing my Brahms run with Arthur Rubinstein and Gregor Piatigorsky performing the Cello Sonatas, as heard in this set:
