Hardbopjazz Posted October 13, 2017 Report Posted October 13, 2017 I was there for the concert at Carnegie Hall in 2007. Quote
Gheorghe Posted October 14, 2017 Report Posted October 14, 2017 At least one tune from that evening is on Roadshows Vol. 1. "Some Enchanting Evening". But it´s not really representative, it sounds very reluctant. But as I said that´s the only item I know from that date. There is much more music on Vol. 2 , again with McBride and Roy Haynes from 2010. It may sound strange for jazz purists, but I´m much more used to Rollins with the settings with electric bass. Maybe as I get older I can hear the electric bass better, it cuts better through the band....... Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 14, 2017 Author Report Posted October 14, 2017 Sonny wasn't too happy for the fans that night. The show was supposed to begin at 8 PM but didn't start to 8:40. This was due to Carnegie Hall only having one ticket window open for the people with "Will Call" tickets. The first set was with the trio, Rollins, Haynes and McBride. When the set finished, the seats in front and next to me were still empty. People were upset, and rightfully so. Sonny apologized to his fans the following day, but it wasn't his doing. Carnegie Hall did issue a refund for anyone that didn't get in for the first set. This ordeal did impact Sonny's playing for both sets. This was why only one track was released. Sonny wasn't happy with his playing. The goal was to release the entire concert from 2007 along with the 1957 concert which has. I want to hear that 1957 concert. Hopefully one day. I believe Roy Haynes was on drums for the 1957 Carnegie Hall concert. Quote
Gheorghe Posted October 15, 2017 Report Posted October 15, 2017 Thank you, Hardbopjazz for your kind answer. I really thought I did a sacrilege when I wrote about my impressions from only one tune that I hear on record. But indeed it sounds like Sonny was somehow far from his peak. The surroundings really must have been annoying . Quote
