brownie Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Keynote was very active in the jazz field from 1943 to 1946 under Harry Lim. Lim went on to other activities but briefly reactivated the label in 1955. At least one 12" album was produced 'Jazz Romp' by Nat Pierce's Jazzmen. A very good album that featured quite a number of interesting people: Don Fagerquist, Doug Mettome, Ruby Braff, Frank Rehak, Matthew Gee, Billy Byers, Richie Kamuca, Freddie Green, Jimmy Wood, Jo Jones. Any other Keynote LP? Quote
couw Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 no further info, but I did find a pic of that LP Quote
brownie Posted March 7, 2004 Author Report Posted March 7, 2004 That cover looks as bad as my copy. And the vinyl sounds worse but the music surviving through the various scratches is just fine. Should have paid closer attention to the fine print in the liner notes to the Nat Pierce. The notes refer to a second Keynote album by Harvey Leonard. Checked the Lord book. That Leonard album was called 'Jazz Ectasy' played by a trio and a sextet (with Rehak, Jerry Lloyd, Teddy Kotick and Will Bradley Jr.). Can't get over never getting that Ectasy. Quote
couw Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 No mention whatsoever about Harvey Leonard or Jazz Ecstasy on the web I'm afraid. Quote

FWIW , Downbeat gave the Leonard Keynote LP a one-star review . Not having heard it , I can't tell you whether that review was justified or not . I will say that if nothing else , the cover is interesting ; like something on the Saturn label . Leonard was with Chet Baker in 1956 and then.....? Quote
Chas Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 John's link to the Nat Pierce cover is dead , so for the one or two people who care , here it is : Quote
