Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 The AMG gives it 2.5 stars, but doesn't have a review. I just won this sealed CD on eBay (for only $4.50 total, including shipping!!!) On paper, (at least to me) it looks maybe a little better than 2.5 stars. What should I be expecting?? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 um...it is sort of cheesy. off the top of my head i remember liking about half the songs but overall they didn't save the album for me. the version of a monk tune (blue monk? well you needn't?-i am getting confused with the cedar walton album mobius i think) is awesomely funky in my opinion but the closing never can say goodbye is way too smooth. i remember the first two songs being pretty cool too maybe. all in all, i was surprised how commercial this album sounded for strata east. there is a propensity of string-synth sounds too-which i found surprising. see what you think but i sold this session. too bad-nice lineup. disappointing. brownie Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Would agree with akanalog. The album starts on the right track with 'Changa Chikuyo', with good contributions by everybody but then it goes downhill except for an interesting but very short tribute to Paul Robeson by Larry Ridley who overdubbed four bass parts. Most of the remaining numbers are plain early fusion music. Wish Sonny Fortune had let himself go in his solos... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2004 Author Report Posted March 12, 2004 Oh well, I didn't pay very much for it - and actually, I'm gonna bid on some other stuff from the same seller anyway, so I'm really only out $1.48 (what the auction closed for) plus $1.00 (for shipping an "additional" CD) -- so in some respects, I'm only playing $2.50 for it.
