GA Russell Posted February 6, 2021 Report Posted February 6, 2021 Marty Elkins (vocals) Mike Richmond (bass & cello) 'Tis Autumn On her fifth recording, Marty teams up with the veteran bassist Mike Richmond. They went into the studio with Mike's 170 year-old Tyrolean bass and 120 year-old Czechoslovakian cello to create this delightful outing. Marty Elkins’ affinity for these gems and her straight-ahead, soulful interpretations imbue these songs with a timeless feel, while Mike Richmond conjures an entire orchestra with his bass. ~ "Vocals, bass and Golden Age jazz standards, that's all that's here and it's all that's needed. Working their way through ten classics penned between 1926 and 1947, vocalist Marty Elkins and bassist Mike Richmond get right to the heart of jazz history". "Their music has an easy draw to it, but there's absolutely no drama behind that magnetism, no too-clever-by-half rewrites, outside antics or fancying of futurism in interpretations. Grounded with a sense of respect for the material, this duo delights in the opportunity to place it in good light." Dan Bilawsky - All About Jazz "Richmond’s cello adds much eloquence and emotion to such tracks as “Stairway To The Stars” and "My Mother's Eyes." Elkins sees much space to manipulate the melodies and wordplay, while Richmond’s intimate grooves support this timeless and rich effort". Dan Gould Posted February 6, 2021 Report Posted February 6, 2021 Thanks for this post I may check this out, because I got into a FB conversation with Ms Elkins about Percy France and I got a nice remembrance from her about him. She told me that he sang on their gigs and that was something no one else seems to have known about Percy that he could carry a tune, at least for Wedding-type gigs. I've been curious since about Ms. Elkins singing. Quote
