I'm reading the John Chilton bio and he claims Bean's first recording was Mamie Smith's Mean Daddy Blues from April 1922 supposedly recorded shortly after he joined her band. Chuck Nessa Posted March 25, 2004 Report Share Posted March 25, 2004 Bruyninckx lists Hawk as a "possible" alto player on 4 tunes from circa Sept 5 & 10, 1922. His current work (in progress) is a cd-rom titled "85 Years of Recorded Jazz". The final version should be out this summer. You can get some info here .
