Sometimes it seems that the marimba enabled him a more "hyper" rush of notes, but maybe that's why he chose marimba for those pieces, to get that ease to articulate those types of ideas.

First time I saw him live, Keystone Korner in 70's, he had both instruments on stage and was using four mallets and would actually sometimes jump back and forth between vibes to marimba in the same solo, so yes, I think it just gave him an enhanced range of sounds and effects which he could mix together.  The other time I saw him was post-accident in 1988 at Penn's Landing, and he was using two mallets and just vibes, I assume just physical compromised he needed to make by then.  But he was still superb.
