John B Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Hasn't GBV pretty much been a Robert Pollard solo project for years, anyway? I remember thinking so when he fired the rest of the band and hired all new people. I haven't heard much recent GBV but I still pull out Alien Lanes every now and again. Quote
Eric Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Interesting - I have become a fan over the last year. Do you think Pollard solo stuff will be all that different from GBV? Eric Quote
dave9199 Posted April 26, 2004 Author Report Posted April 26, 2004 (edited) John B - yes & no as he's the only original member, but he puts out actual solo albums as much as GBV albums. Eric - I think his solo stuff sounds like GBV of past glories, but sounds like a continuation of that which is great! The current GBV since 1999 and having been on a major label (TVT), I think Pollard was trying to write in a way that wasn't him. That's why he does solo albums and, to me, they remind me more of GBV that the current GBV. Pollard has a new album coming out in May called Fiction Man. If you want to know what albums to get, let me know, I've got 'em all. Edited April 26, 2004 by dave9199 Quote
Eric Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Dave, Do tell ... I picked up their greatest hits and it is very interesting. I missed a chance to see them in Columbia MO a few months ago ... Thanks, Eric Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 Dave and I have sort of talked about this. I know GBV, but am not as big a fan as Dave. Everything I know about Pollard leads me to believe that an announcement like this is his sense of humor. Its like hanging up the title GBV, then recording an album with the original members under a new name. But again, I don't know that much about the guy. Dave seems to think this is a pretty serious thing, so I'm probably wrong. I don't know what to make of it. Quote
J Larsen Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 This seems totally irrelevant to me - you know, a rose by any other name and all. Quote
WD45 Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 When I saw this thread, I thought "Again?" A guy I used to work with at a record store was a huge fan. He got some tix to see them and then they broke up and cancelled the show. He was bummed. It happened once, it'll happen again. Quote
dave9199 Posted April 27, 2004 Author Report Posted April 27, 2004 (edited) OK Eric, break out the credit card. Here's the best stuff: GBV 1. Bee Thousand (tie-best) 2. Alien Lanes (tie-best) 3. Propeller 4. Mag Earwig 5. Fast Japanese Spin Cycle (EP) Pollard solo 1. Not In My Airforce 2. Waved Out 3. Speak Kindly of your Volunteer Fire Dept. (best) 4. Choreographed Man Of War Side projects 1. Lexo & The Leapers-Ask Them (EP) 2. Go Back Snowball-Calling Zero (best) Edited May 5, 2004 by dave9199 Quote
J Larsen Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 I like Propeller best by FAR, but that's also the album where I jumped on the bandwagon so that COULD be the reason I like it so much better than the others. Quote
