ghost of miles Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Just heard it in the All Things Considered billboard. Author of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, etc. A hell of a writer. Quote
brownie Posted April 28, 2004 Report Posted April 28, 2004 The news of Selby's death is frontpage news in today's edition of the Paris daily newspaper Liberation. 'An American Novel' is the bold headline of the frontpage. http://www.liberation.fr/page.php?Template=QUOTDUJOUR Quote
paul secor Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 Also "The Room" & "The Demon." His later work is a bit different but still worthwhile. Make sure you familiarize yourself w/Gilbert Sorrentino as well, friends from Brooklyn & the man to whom "Last Exit" is dedicated. "Steelwork" & "Imaginative Qualites of Actual Things" are excellent places to start. just a few blocks from the setting of "Land's End," clem Missed the news of Selby's passing. He was a helluva writer. I remember reading Last Exit in college in the mid sixties. Not to intrude upon Mr Selby's tribute, but, as Clem mentions, his friend Gilbert Sorrentino should be read too. I like his novels, but like his poetry even more. "A Classic Case" has been one of my favorite poems since I first read it in college. (Even then, I identified with Major Hoople.) Quote
