  1. Egads - these terms! There is an online Mainstream label listing - there is no discography. Discographies have been session-based since the 1930s so the term "sessionography" is superfluous. A list of album titles is not a discography, no matter what down beat tries to tell you. "Songography" is a new one on me. But I suspect that a discography with a song index and and an issue index would suit you just fine. If you own all the records and you're serious about putting something together, do it in BRIAN and I will be glad to supply the information that I already have: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Temp/mainstream.htm Mike
  2. I believe I have located the source of some of these alternative takes. A Time 12" LP included the following: Clifford Brown: The Boss Man [actually incomplete alt. of Caravan] Kenny Dorham: A Waltz Tommy Turrentine: Gunga Din Booker Little: Variations On The Scene Clifford Brown: Clifford's Fantasy [actually incomplete alt. of Sweet Clifford] Booker Little: Gondolfo's Bounce [Gandolfo's Bounce] I can't audition it - anyone got "Volume 8" by Clifford Brown - Kenny Dorham - Booker Little - Tommy Turrentine? I'm especially interested to know if ALL these are alternatives (Gunga Din, Variations On The Scene), which would mean more previously unknown stuff, right? Mike
  3. Interesting! Related is Carla Bley's tune "Walking Woman" - later melded with another of her tunes "Batterie" to create "Walking Batterie Woman". The original two were recorded by Paul Bley for ESP 1964 (Mike Snow did the cover and there's the Walking Woman at bottom) and WBW first recorded for Fontana 1966. Mike
  4. I find one hit at Social Security Death Index for "Duane Tatro" - born June 27, 1920, died March 13, 2004 in California But according to the Nicholson article, our DT was born May 18, 1927. Mike
  5. As some AudioFidelity/Dauntless stuff came out on Fresh Sound, there's a possibility of that. There was also an LP reissue of Unity on Chiaroscuro. Dickerson discography at my website. Mike
  6. Milt Jackson: Plenty Plenty Soul. The Atlantic Jazz CD issue 1269-2 from 1989. I'm pretty sure Black Codes doesn't specify which tunes are from which date, more's the pity. My friend Noal Cohen is going mad trying to get ANY recording date for some recent issues - especially bad is the Mack Avenue label. Mike
  7. I should have picked up the clues from his wearing the deerstalker cap. Maybe someone should write a history of jazz just based on what appeared in movies - Miller Story, Goodman Story, Krupa Story, Young Man And A Horn, Pete Kelly's Blues, Fabulous Dorseys, Lady Sings The Blues, Five Pennies, Bird, The Cotton Club, etc. Because unfortunately, I suspect that's what the "real world" out there thinks. Mike
  8. I believe that indeed it was a radio broadcast that Riverside issued to fulfill Monk's contract. Isn't this mentioned in the notes? Or maybe it's mentioned only in the Riverside box. Mike
  9. That CD switches the recording dates too. The back cover is wrong but the booklet is correct. Mike
  10. Yeah, I saw that on an episode of that TV show about Thelonious Monk. Except it wasn't caught in the car wheels, it was caught in an elevator. Man, speaking of stuff you never knew - I had no idea Monk was a white guy and a detective, as well as obsessive-compulsive. Mike
  11. The blues on Black Codes is listed on the disc itself, isn't it? Not on the cover or booklet. It may have been on the LP label, I can't remember. Mike
  12. McNeill was on the faculty at Rutgers/New Brunswick but I believe he is no longer there. I should specify - visual arts, not music. Mike
  13. That's the guy. Why don't you give him a call - Vinson Hill Jazz Piano, Jazz History Office: Shea Auditorium, Room 167 Phone: (973) 720-3469 Education: BA, Dartmouth College. Performances: Solo pianist and trio settings with artists such as Michael Moore, Joe LaBarbera, Mel Lewis, Eugene Wright, and others. Concerts at Symphony Space, solo piano at Hanratty’s and Mikell’s in New York City and the Arrowwood Conference Center in Purchase, NY. Currently performing in a duo with pianist Derek Smith. Recordings: Savoy, twelve recordings on the Music Minus One label in the areas of jazz history, jazz improvisation, and popular piano, many now re-released on compact disc.. WP [William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ] faculty since 1972. Mike
  14. Liked the film - what's the DVD like? Good commentary? Is it just Pekar? Any bonus stuff? Mike
  15. Jim said "All RVG" for Johnny Hammond Smith, but I am getting info that the June 18, 1968 date (Nasty) was done at Town Sound by Orville O'Brien. Does Ruppli say RVG for this? Thanks - Mike
  16. Interesting! I own "Fairyland" on the Zodiac label (ZLP-5003, not listed in Bruyninck or Lord). I guess I had it in my mind that it was the original issue, but yep, there on the cover it says it contains previously released material. Here's what I know of the Mega 5000 series: 5000 - Coryell, Larry: Fairyland 5001 - Purdie, Bernard: Stand By Me 5002 - Goodman, Benny: Let's Dance Again 5003 - Thomas, Leon: Gold Sunrise On Magic Mountain 5004 - Ward, Jerry Glenn: Focus 5005 - Apollo 100: Master Pieces 5006 - Harris, Phil: Southern Comfort - The Best Of Phil Harris 5007 - Spooner, Russ: You've Just Been Spoonerized 5008 - Black, Bill: Rock 'n Roll Forever There's other stuff in 600 and 1000 series, by Sammi Smith, Cleanhead Vinson, Bill Black, etc. Mike
  17. Another question - A 1986 album by Jakob Magnusson (Time Zone) has Hubbard playing on one track. According to Lord CDROM 5.0, another trumpeter plays on another - name is given only as "King" - anyone got better info on this? Thanks - Mike
  18. I have no doubt at this point. Hayes was Hubbard's regular drummer for years. Mike
  19. Yes, both Cliff Walk and Looking Ahead were published by Melotone Music. In fact, some issues of Booker Little & Friend call Looking Ahead "Molotone Music" for some bizarre reason. Mike
  20. What's so funny about an official list? If we aren't talking about official, authorized, take-it-to-the-bank (or the judge) permissions, then it's all bullshit. Here you go again with your "many jazz artists" - how are you backing that up? I will grant you Metheny <http://www.patmethenygroup.com/pmg/qa/questionView.cfm?queID=317> and Charlie Hunter <http://www.charliehunter.com/setlists/tapingpolicy.html> Scofield, no - not on jazz gigs. So where's this "many"? Mike
  21. Getz might well have had a reasonable claim for first *issued* live record - the Bear Family set was very recent (not in the 1930s!). Were you thinking of Getz at Storyville (Roost)? Mike
  22. The more expensive ones have the sticker that says "Not produced by Adam Holzman" Mike
  23. Got to be - it's the only Cedar tune on that record. Excellent work! At this point, here's the entry: ==================== Date: late 1969 or early 1970 Label: Private Recording Freddie Hubbard (ldr), Junior Cook (ts), Freddie Hubbard (t), Cedar Walton (p), Wayne Dockery (b), Louis Hayes (d) a. a-01 Red Clay - 16:53 (Freddie Hubbard) Phoenix10 LP 12": PHX 318 - Extended b. a-02 Afreaka [aka Mission Eternal] - 18:42 (Cedar Walton) Phoenix10 LP 12": PHX 318 - Extended c. c-01 The Intrepid Fox - 20:00 (Freddie Hubbard) Everest LP 12": FS 361 - Hot Horn Piccadilly LP 12": PIC 3467 - Intrepid Fox d. d-01 Yesterday - 09:42 (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) Everest LP 12": FS 361 - Hot Horn Piccadilly LP 12": PIC 3467 - Intrepid Fox e. d-02 Pensativa - 18:27 (Clare Fischer) Everest LP 12": FS 361 - Hot Horn Piccadilly LP 12": PIC 3467 - Intrepid Fox Omit Junior Cook (ts) on d. Omit Freddie Hubbard (t) on d. Afreaka listed as "Freddie's Tune" on issues. Sources list drummer as "Billy Hayes" (or Billy Higgins) but this is believed to be incorrect. The personnel shown performed at Slugs' in NYC between December 25-31, 1969. Everest LP lists pianist as "Cedar Watton". ============================= Am I correct in thinking that the credit for Cook on soprano is incorrect? I've never found any evidence of him playing anything other than tenor. Wish I could pin down a date and location. Hubbard played a lot in NYC (Village Vanguard, Slugs', Carnegie Hall) between February and April. Still, a vast improvement from what all the published discographies have listed. Mike
  24. I'm railing against the idea that the list that you posted is some kind of indicator as to the widespread acceptance of this concept by artists. It would be wonderful if there really were such a list with official info, but this ain't it. The more I look at it, the more problems I see with it. And because it exists and it's on the internet, people will believe it. Mike
  25. Now I regret selling that one after getting the Prestige box. Also miss some of the good liner notes from those 2-fers. Mike
