  1. I bought these when my wife asked if there was some jazz history overview on DVD. While we were watching I could not help but comment with different opinions on the topics. After a while she asked what was the point with so many questionable views in the documentary.

It really was Marsalis' failed attempt to re- write jazz history.

I would feel confident "assuming" that Mayhew had a tape, this Cecil Payne tape, and a labelname to go with it. So him and Collectables wheeled and dealed, and this, dear music lover, is the result.

..... and the tunes were re-titled to avoid royalties, or themes edited out.

It reminds me of the way the Donald Byrd - Pepper Adams tracks recorded for Warwick were treated when reissued under Herbie Hancock's name to cash in on them.

I always regretted that when Columbia was issuing its big box sets like Brubeck's studio recordings, that it never got around to issuing a set of the live things it had. Would have made a nice set.

But it would have been a lot more work for tape researchers etc. the label does not really want to pay for.

Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto "Por Causa de Voce/Because of You: A Birthday Celebration of Antonio Carlos Jobim" featuring Maucha Andet and Romero Lubambo

All I can say is everytime I play this cd I feel so much better. Beautiful music, excellent live recording. Swinging, real jazz feeling, excellent singing and playing.

Thanks for the recommendation - I will check this out. I heard Jovino Santos live in Hermeto Pascoal's group many years ago and he was great!

  5. I found the session Ike Quebec recorded for Blue Note with Duke Pearson and the Israel Crosby - Vernel Fournier team disappointing. Nice, but somewhat uninspired. Three tracks can be heard on this CD - most of what is heard fits the decription in the thread title.

Debut recording of a pianist we will definitely hear from in years to come. Very expressive playing, the instrument's dynamics by far surpass that of a modern piano. It is anonymous, built ca. 1785, a type known to all four composers, in perfect shape, and possibly built by Friedrici from Gera, who was C.P.E. Bach's favourite builder.
