  1. A Night In Tunisia with new Spanish language lyrics from the album Live Lunch Break by arguably the best Latin Jazz singer, Maria Rivas (1960-2019), It probably was recorded in 2011 and released only as a download, together with her last Studio album, Motivos, which was recorded in 2018, while she already was diagnosed with the cancer that soon took her life. Sidemen were not identified, except for her husband Miguel Chacón on bass, and are hard to guess, as she performed with changing personnel often different from her studio groups. She is a favourite of mine and this is the third time I featured her in a BFT. This is the style that was at the center of her activities, she thought of herself as a Latin Jazz singer in the first place. There is a number of videos on YouTube in that style.

  2. R.I.P.

Never heard any music that he played on, but I found out that he was drumming in Pony Poindexter's quartet immediately before the latter's move to Europe and was supposed to record with him, which never took place. Are there any recordings with him out there?

My experience is the opposite. On the classical forum I visit, there is significantly more detailed discussion of (esp.) HIP harpsichord performances than piano equivalents.

My experience is based on German language forums, perhaps the general attitude is different in English language forums. Would you post links to these?

In fact, I've found the volume and diversity of commendable (and prolific) modern harpsichord artists so intimidating that I haven't investigated in depth.

Yes, it is a wide and diverse area of music, I can relate to that. Without my decades of listening and learning I would be lost.

  4. Here's another video appetizer, made on the occasion of the presentation of a newly acquired copy of a Zell harpsichord for the Frankfurt music academy. All the players are or have been students there, it's all German music mostly before Bach, a very nice overview. One of the players, Alexander von Heissen (from 29:50), recently won a Bach competition and is one of the rising stars on the scene, but my favorite is Ortrun Sommerweiß, who plays a Suite attributed to Jan Adam Reincken with amazing natural self- confidence (starting at 15:00) - I look forward to hear her playing live again in two months. The comments are all in German, with plenty insights from the builder of the instrument, but the music alone makes it worthwhile and gives testimony to the high level we have at this school.

  5. Over the last few days:

    all excellent stuff ...

This afternoon I topped it with Korneel Bernolet's recording of Balbastre's Premier Livre:

I finally gave in and ordered a copy, even though I already have at least half a dozen recordings of this collection, but I don't  regret it, it's one of the top three, some pieces he plays better than everybody else. And top sound on a copy of a Hemsch harpsichord. The original is kept in a Boston museum, but it is rarely copied due to its complex construction, which allows many colours other harpsichords do not have, and Bernolet makes great use of them.
