  1. Hi. I recently bought a stand alone DAC and WOW! do my jazz CDs sound better. Is it worth my hard earned money to upgrade the RCA cables that connect my DAC to my amp? Thanks for your input.
  2. Hi. I just discovered Karin Krog. I've been listening to We Could Be Flying. Accepting the fact that she is unique, I was wondering if anyone was aware of other vocalists who have an off-kilter style like Karin's?
  3. If you will be in motion, I recommend avoiding buds that seal off external noise. The problem is that the movement of the cord translates to annoying background noise with that style of bud. I exercise with Bose Tri-ports - they are over the ear, but light as a feather and produce a sound that is appropriately good for MP3s.
  4. Hi. I'd like to acquire this music in any format. I'm a big fan of Gary Peacock's 60s output! Thanks.
  5. It's not too hard to find jazz holiday albums by the big names, although there aren't a lot of big names who put out holiday albums. When artists who aren't well known outside of the region they live and gig in put out holiday albums, they are hard to track down via the normal search methods. Please recommend albums from people in your neck of the woods or others you have gotten to known. If you have links for purchasing the music, that would be nice too. Thanks!
  6. It seems fairly common for a holiday song to get issued on a non-holiday jazz album. I especially like Santa Claus is Comin' to Town on Bill Evan's Trio 64. When you expand the search to include Greensleeves and My Favorite Things, the list gets very long. Which songs along these lines do you recommend? Thank you in advance.
  7. I'm interested in obataining all of the Gary Peacock tracks from this Mosaic set. Luckily, they are all on discs 4 and 5. If you are more partial to the first 3, I'd buy 4 and 5 from you. (I don't need the book either.) PM me with price and condition.
  8. Acc. to Tom Lord's Database - that's it - there are no other recordings with those two together.
  9. Thanks for pointing out this recording! I would have never found it - it was released with an audiobook, so it is hard to discover this via the normal search methods. Got the mp3 at Amazon for a buck.
  10. Good Halloween music is tough to find. I'd be interested to hear recommendations. My faves include Halloween by Lambert Hendricks Ross, The Great Pumpkin Waltz by Vince Guaraldi, and Spooks by Harris-Leigh Woodwinds. I'm interested to know if any jazz musicians have recorded tunes based on Halloween-related classical pieces, like the Bach Fugue, Dream of the Witches' Sabbath by Berlioz, or Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens. Thank you for your input!
  11. Being fairly new here, I'm curious what the rules of selling items are and perhaps the rationale behind them. I've read all forum rules, but I was quite surprised to read this reply.
  12. Tom Lord's database says "unidentified personnel."
  13. WOW - that's some list. Thank you for taking the time. I'll check out most of these. -Colin
  14. I enjoy jazz played on unusual instruments or with unusal combinations of instruments. Such recordings seem few and far between. Some personal faves are the Australian Jazz Quartet's use of the bassoon, Eric Dolphy's use of the bass clarinet and Vinnie Burke's string quartet with violin, cello, bass and guitar. Any recommendations along these lines? Thank you.
  15. Does anyone know where one can get conversions from Down Beat volume number to date issued? Specifically, I want to track down xxx/13 but I only know the year - 1963. Thanks in advance!
  16. I sampled the songs - this is the sort of thing I was looking for - thanks! I sampled the songs. This is a very cool album! I'm always on the look out for something different and this definitely qualifies. Thanks!
  17. Hi. I'm looking for straight ahead jazz with good banjo solos. So far I have only found 3 tracks by Chuck Wayne - "Greensleeves" "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Lovely." (Those have banjo guitar (6 string) and I don't care if it's 5 string or 6 - the sound is what I'm looking for.) I know there are a lot of really early recordings with banjo, but I'd prefer something more hi-fi. I have listened to samples of Bela Fleck, but I'm looking for something more traditional sounding - traditional in every way except that a banjo solo is featured. (If Bela has traditional sounding recordings, let me know.) 50's and 60's recordings preferred, but later stuff is OK. Any recommendations? Thank you for your help! -Colin
  18. I'm a sucker for a great bass solo. I like inventive solos but not too avant-garde. I lean toward 50s and 60s material. Upright, accoustic only. My favorite soloists are Vinnie Burke, Gary Peacock, and of course OP & PC. Reply with bassists and/or specific tracks with "WOW!" solos. A big thank you to all replies already received and all those coming. I will try to track down the vast majority of your recommendations, especially material on eMusic.
  19. Is anyone interested in the self-titled Lou Mecca Quartet Japanese Mini-LP style CD? I paid $50, but will pass it along for $20 + $3 for domestic shipping. Disc - pristine / Sleeve - very good (very minor shelf wear).
  20. Kevin has got me thinking - I'm going to look for Merry Ole Soul and sell the box complete at a later date. Sorry for the tease. -Colin
  21. Thanks for the input, Kevin. A quick look around shows Merry Ole Soul to be at least as pricey as the Mosiac boxset. I'd like to pass discs 1 and 2 to someone who will really enjoy them. -Colin
  22. Would anyone be interested in CDs 1 and 2 from the 3 CD set? I bought the set for the Christmas Album and that is about all you'd be missing. $20 includes domestic Media shipping. PayPal please. Oops, I forgot to add: The discs and inserts are mint.
