  1. also time frame of this movie?

    i'd say 2 / 3 weeks??????????

I dunno. I always assumed less than a week; just a few days. Can't say I ever thought it through though.

That's a good question. It depends on where Marsalis Wallace went on business and how long he was gone. Let's break it down:

Chronologically, the first thing to happen in the movie (outside of Butch's flashback) is Jules and Vincent hitting Brad and his friends. That, the mess in the car, the visit from the Wolf, the stand-off in the diner, and Butch's visit to Marslais all take place during the same day. Am I right in remembering that Vincent's "date" with Mia Wallace is that same night? It is possible that Marsalis really isn't out of town that night, but is attending to the business at Butch's fight. If that's the case, then the whole film could happen over the course of only two days.

    Day One:

    Hit over at Brad's

    Blowing Marvin's head off

    Clean-up at Jimmy's house/The Wolf

    Stand-off at the diner

Vincent and Mia - Butch's fight

    Day Two:

Butch's return to the apartment - kills Vincent

Butch and Marsalis w/Zed and the Gimp

    Butch escapes

I seem to remember Mia being with Marsalis at the fight, however. Doesn't she thank Vincent for the date? That would fuck up my chronology here. Anyone else care to take a stab at it?

Alexander, is Marsalis[sic] Wallace one of Marsalis Brothers? Every family gotta have a black sheep. :P

  2. I mean, fine if you don't like his music or whatever, but the guy has more breadth to his oeuvre than anyone I know.

And i'm sure his bread (or make it hors d'oeuvre) is well buttered by now. :)

I like most of his albums from the earlier years (about up to 1997), but IMO for the last 10 years Zorn definnitely stuck in a groove. And he should stop pretending to be a serious modern composer, because his best work happens when he and his partners in crime are having fun, either intentionally or not. (Big Gundown, Naked City, Spy vs Spy, Ganryu Island, Sonny Clark Memorial Qt, Cobra (one on hatArt), etc.). John Cage and Steve Reich he is not, but even if he put up nothing but aforementioned albums he would become a solid part of jazz history.

Apparently, he can do about anything at this point and sell it (hey, he is officially a "Genius" via McArthur Grant , but in all honesty, do you see much progress in his development as an artist?

  3. Check out these two of Julie Tippetts: one with Keith, one without- both are wonderful.

As for Julie's spelling of her last name, could it be simply Tippetts as "of Tippett", like Ben- Ben's, Steve-Steve's, etc?

Guess it is not very common in English, but in other cultures quite the norm, i.e. Ivanov (he)-Ivanova (she).

  6. Anthony Braxton Willisau (Quartet 1991) 4-cd Set Hat Art Marilyn Crispell, Mark Dresser, Gerry Hemmingway

Dang, I really want that record, but I'm not going to get sucked into a bidding war.

Hopefully, it will be reissued sooner or later. :rcry

Why it's still not re-issued is beyond me. Are there less people who will buy this set than, say, Oliver Lake's Zaki?

Could it be some legal issues?

  7. Brendel, Perahia, Uchida &, in America (tho' to lesser degree bc he came along later), Richard Goode are all BRANDS. BRANDS. BRANDS.

everyone you hear about them-- & ya'll DO hear a lot, relatively speaking-- need to considered through that BUSINESS filter.

that said, there are plenty of terrific musicians who did & do record for non- DG, Sony, Decca, Philips (none of which exist as they did anymore anyway) so... tho' it's harder to find their cds, it's almost always worth the extra effort.

    from the classical desk,
