  1. Song For Linda, Nelly, Frank and Hans

Titles like Song for Darnell, Song for Chet, Song for Kathy, Song for Leo, Song for Niels, Song for Gijs and Song for George Bush made me insanely jealous. Why did nobody ever made a tune dedicated to Hans, like Song for Hans .......... and I mean, really dedicated to me, not to one of the million other people who's surname is ............ Hans ( like Hans Andersen), but fully credited to myself?

Well, I have some great news.! That tune exists: !Song For Linda, Nelly, Frank and Hans. Although I have to share the title with three more people, I'm really part of the tune title. It's a composition from Juan Pablo Carkvenik, an Argentine guitar player.

    Keep swinging

    Durium (Hans)

    Hey, Hans.

There is a song in this world indeed dedicated solely to YOU.

  2. Anyone else here who spares some love for this recording of Nocturnes?

    post-440332-1157892793.jpg

As for polonaises- I recently stumble upon LP by Lazar Berman (it's on DG)- the guy who swore never to play Chopin after he didn't qualify for Chopin competition in Warsaw in his youth, yet apparently got coaxed into it by DG honchos. Haven't tried it yet though. I doubt it will be as good as his Liszt, but one never knows.

But I sure like this reading of Polonaises:

  3. I second Michel Devos's choice of Moravec (check his Debussy & Schumann too).

Wonder if anyone here has heard these performances, which are also among my favorites:

  5. I have the original FMP vinyl and have not found that one as impressive as the stuff with Mangelsdorff, or even Pica-Pica for that matter. Just my $0.02... carry on.

Baby Sommer is the bomb on Pica Pica!

I love Baby Sommer - been recently checking out the Berlin album with Cecil and 'Touch the Earth...' with Leo Smith and Kowald. Sommer's fantastic on both IMHO!

Check out his solo CD- Sachsische Schatulle & his work as a member of Zentrallquartett- all CDs on Intakt Records. :tup:tup:tup

  6. Is "Funny Rat, Peter Brotzmann & Shoji Hano" Organissimo's way to say "Free jazz discussion thread"?

462 pages seems a bit excessive for discussion of this particular album, good as it probably is. :)

  7. I like "Unimpressed by his mixture of Polish/French and German-Jewish stock, his Soviet interrogator sent him on a train heading East for a labour camp - where he remained from 1945 until 1970."

That's quite a piece. Whoever wrote it could sure make a living as a pulp fiction hack.

  8. Jed Distler at classicstoday.com has regularly fallen all over himself with glee at every new Hatto release. There's a "perfect 10" review of her alleged Mozart cycle on top of the page right now. link

Now I wonder whose Mozart cycle it is. The whole thing is rather bizarre.

  9. Oscar P is a guy whose work gets trashed a lot, and I'm not too familiar with the rest of his work, but this is a very nice trio album w/Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. Very good playing on a good collection of compositions. Oscar's playing is kinda greazy on a few of the songs.

    Guy

Never understand all the thrashing of OP. OK, he's not an innovator or major trend-setter, but he's one of the most accomplished pianists in jazz & his playing is just plain beautiful, even on his cheesier albums.

BTW, has anyone got CD of Fiorello/My Fair Lady for sale or trade? I'm looking hard for this one.
