Any relation to Joel Futterman?
-
Seems that chewy and I hit a raw nerve!
I might reconsider my opinion on ECM when they release something in this vein
I believe this one is a close match:
-
IT IS THE MOST PRETENTIOUS CATALOG EVER. THE FRONT COVER IS BRIGHT WHITE, WITH A BLACK AND WHITE PIC OF A SIDEWALK AND SOME KIDS FEET. THEN, ON THE INSIDE, IT LISTS IN ABC ORDER, THE MOST OBNOXIOUS JAZZ ALBUMS EVER RECORDED IN THE HISTORY OF JAZZ. THEN THERE ARE SOME MORE PHOTOS, INCLUDING A VERY INSPIRING BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO OF A TREE.
Snatch that catalog before it goes out of print & sells on e-bay for a price that only Mosaic sets & Tina Brooks Lps can challenge.
-
not jazz, but from a 29 cent cutout bin, tim buckley happy sad.
probably 59 cents. sviatoslav richter's incredible sofia live vinyvlrecording of pictures at an exhibition!
29 cent cutout bin?
have they survived into 21st century or are you talking ancient history?

Bobby Previte- 23 constellations of Joan Miro (amazing!!!)
Edvard Simon Trio- The Process (especially how good a JAZZ player John Patitucci is- he always was associated for me with some "fusoid" (read- drek) stuff).
The Bill Evans Album (the one on Columbia)

Wherever you start with Getz, you're not done unless you've heard these two:
-
ps: ECM sucks
Actually, they have about a hundred pretty good jazz albums. Not bad for such a sucky label.
-
'the other side of jimmy smith' is most unfortunate.
I always suspected Jimmy Smith to be a one-sided player. No wonder his other side didn't work.
-
O'Neals Porch has never really grabbed me either. I don't dislike it, but there are many albums of his that I prefer to listen to.
I think I like him best with Other Dimensions In Music.
Same feelings about O'Neal Porch. Sounds too pedestrian to warrant repeated listenings.
IMO Parker's best group is In Order To Survive.
Peach Orchard might as well be his Magnum Opus.

To cure that "Mozart solo keyboard" sickness or Hammerklavier hangover immerse yourself into this set.
The music & the playing is as good as it gets.

Schubert has more of what I find in Jazz, as great as Ludwig is, Franz is sexier, swings more....I can more easily go from a Schubert piano sonata, especially the latter ones, to Trane, than from Beethoven to a Jazz record.
Mozart is the schwingiest of them all. I can go from him to Sun Ra via Dave Brubeck in no time at all.

HOW MANY TIMES MORE SOPHISTICATED HOW MUCH MORE BETTER THAN US DO YOU THINK YOU ARE CASUE U LISTEN TO THESE MEANDERING, POINTLESS ECM RECORDS? 10, 5, or 3?

I'm in the mood for some soft sax and vibes, actually!
Got a bottle of Corbel nicely chilled.
Marion Brown/Gunter Hampel tandem might do the trick (the IAI album).

Not sure, but I'm guessing we've already done this thread. I don't know how to search for it, unfortunately, since ECM is just three letters.

That was actually a thread about Caspar David Friedrich disguised as ECM thread.

3 of my favorites:
Charlie Haden/Egberto Gismonti MONTREAL TAPES
Keith Jarrett NUDE ANTS (quartet live at Village Vanguard)
Charles Lloyd CANTO
Charles Lloyd's latest- Sangam

Looks like Kenny Wheeler have good chances on getting ECM favorite musician's crown in spite of being stripped off coveted Penguin Rosette.
-
Are you on vibes binge again?

There is so much talk about Blue Note albums on this forum, yet ECM albums barely ever mentioned.
Yet there is so much quality & variety in ECM catalog that everyone familiar with it sure has its favorites.
Lets make your recommendations for those who have yet to discover the gems of Manfred Eicher creation.
Here is my current top 10 list in no particular order:
Ralph Towner- Solstice
Jan Garbarek- Afric Pepperbird
AEC- Urban Bushmen
Keith Jarrett- Solo Concerts
Jarrett-Peacock-DeJonette- Whisper Not
Eleni Karaindrou- Music For Films
Benni Maupin- The Jewel in The Lotus
Kenny Wheeler- Music for large and small ensembles
Steve Reich- Music for 18 musicians
Paul Motian- Dance
And ah, those famous ECM sleeves- Sleeves of Desire. There are a few, in all their eye-catching splendor, courtesy of Walmart

Alas, couldn't find the image of a decent size to properly reflect Julius grandstanding.
But somehow, posting this cover immediately brought to mind another one, so here comes.

Wilber Morris - Wilber Force (DIW) w/ David Murray and Denis Charles
Especially fine for the spoken introduction: "My name is Wilber Morris..."
Another great Wilber Morris Trio is the one with Charles Tyler & Denis Charles on Blue Regard called "Collective Improvisations".

I recommend the Ab Baars recordings on the Dutch label Geestgronden. They are trio recordings with de Joode on bass and van Duynhoven on drums -- both great and very precise players. Baars plays clarinet and tenor sax. He studied with John Carter, and his clarinet playing is obviously influenced by Carter. His tenor playing sounds to me to have the best qualities of Ayler and Von Freeman. The recordings I know are:
Sprok
A Free Step (John Carter tunes)
Songs (American Indian songs & 1 Ives song)
There is also "Four" (Data), which is a quartet recording with Roswell Rudd, who inserts some bizarre soliloquy during a medley.
"Party at the Bimhuis" (Wig) has trio recordings and also other recordings with guests. One with Guus Janssen on piano is fabulous, and the playing of Monk's "Reflections" with Misha Mengelberg on piano may be the best recording of that tune.
You mentioning Ab Baars triggered my recommendation of Michael Moore (no, not THAT ONE) trio w/Lindsey Horner & Michael Vatcher. They two CDs of Dylan music (Jewels & Binoculars & Floater) are sublime. They are on dutch label Ramboy & last time I checked were available from Verge Music for $14 Canadian.

HERBIE NICHOLS TRIO- COMPLETE BLUE NOTE (3 CD)
ELMO HOPE- TRIO AND QUINTET
FREDDIE HUBBARD- OPEN SESAME
TINA BROOKS- TRUE BLUE
ART BLAKEY- INDESTRUCTIBLE
ANTHONY WILLIAMS- SPRING
DIZZY REECE- BLUES IN TRINITY
JACKIE MCLEAN- JACKNIFE
not complaining, but this makes less sense than Norah Jones

Damn, I thought it was just another tribute to Charlie Parker.
Ok, Blue Note honchos, here comes The Bird!
And some Bee-boppers think ECM has gone to seed...
