I've seen about 1/2 a dozen 'reaction" videos on youtube, recorded by black people, who laugh uproariously at that scene.  Nobody has ever reacted negatively or suggested that the word used offends them.  That's above and beyond the fact that humor can and must be offensive.

The fact that I am not comfortable typing out the word means it is inappropriate. End of discussion. Seriously Dan, if you walked up to a black man and said, "N***** my man," you'd get punched in the face or worse. Yes, I get it that a black man can say this, but because no one else but a black man can say this, it's not something that should be used in today's world.

Look, I watch a lot of standup comedy. Almost all black standup comics use the "n-word". Some, like Katt Williams use it excessively. I think they use it at times for the shock value more than anything. I have only seen one white comic use it & he does exclusively for shock value and he has received a lot of flack for it.

And you really think those "new football viewers" are in it for the long haul, or is that until Swift breaks up with him?  Sorry I think you have a better chance of bringing new listeners to jazz thru Kenny G then you do of new fans of football thru Taylor Swift and her never ending relationship woes.

Speaking of, why exactly would someone want to date her at this point? Don't you have to know you will be the subject of her poison pen sooner or later?

My daughter started watching football back in 2001 when the Patriots won their first Super Bowl and she has become a bigger fan than I am. She loves watching the game. I think that the NFL getting more women to watch their sport can only benefit the league going forward.

And let's be honest here - a majority of the hatred for Taylor Swift has nothing to do with her new relationship with Kelce and a lot more to do with other aspects of her life which cannot be spoken of here.

Anyway, I see the disclaimer from Max as less PC and more CYA. As we move further away from 70s cinema, new audiences may need more in the way of an introduction to set the stage so to speak.

This is it in a nutshell. I mean, c'mon, with that scene with Little holding a gun to his head as he says, "One move and the n----- gets it"... I'm surprised that it isn't bleeped. Funny as hell but I highly doubt you'll be seeing that played out on Broadway in today's world.

The game was OK; I had no dog in the hunt but decided on the second or third view of Taylor that my true rooting interest was in knowing that 80 million or so Swifties were left crying in their soda pop and that didn't  happen.

Normally I'd say only a few days to Pitchers & Catchers but the Sox will be awful again so ...

I don't get why so many people get their panties in a bunch over Taylor Swift. It's not like she was advocating for anything other than her boyfriend's team.

The way I see it, she brought a lot of new football viewers, particularly young women, which can only be a good thing for that sport, which has a history of being pretty misogynistic.

That's a great idea. I'll see if this forum software supports that.

When one becomes a forum supporter, they get a banner under their avatar. We used to get a small thank you gift from the team's pro shop, but that only happened for the first few years.

I think the reason it works is because it is completely voluntary and simple in its implementation. I don't know that "no ads" is what you want as the benefit here, but you might be able to come up with something like maybe a free song download or two. It's way better than footing the bill yourself if the donations don't keep coming in.

So if this is the source of the RVG 2-CD edition, it sounds like there's no reason to buy the upcoming rerelease.  I'll be curious if anyone compares them.

Rudy used these 7.5 ips master tapes for the additional material, not the stuff that was originally released on LP back in 1957 (and maybe 1983?). He didn't elaborate on which tracks were from what tape but did say that this new set should sound incredible. I'm still thinking I'm going to get this new set.

  7. Michael Cuscuna tells me that he actually found these 7.5 ips masters about 15 years ago and had Rudy Van Gelder use them for his CDs except for the LP master takes. He said the reason they used the 15 ips tape for the original LP tracks was too long to go into but from something Joe Harley said about this new reissue, it sounds like they didn't want to cut up those 7.5 ips tapes to reconstruct the original LP track order.

So this new release will be the first time we hear the original LP tracks from these 7.5 ips tapes. It will also be the first time we hear all of them without RVG's mastering, which in itself may be a good thing.

  8. I'll be picking up the CDs. It turns out that they found the original 7.5 ips tapes and that's what they're going to be using for this reissue. Apparently, Rudy dubs these 7.5 ips reels over to 15 ips reels and those are what they've been calling the master tapes. These 7.5 ips tapes are straight off the soundboard, with no plate reverb added, so that alone has me thinking this is going to sound incredible.

  9. Just finished - Red Garland - Red Alert (Galaxy). Noisy pressing. It looks spotless but plays with quite a bit of low-level crackle in spots. It probably needs a good cleaning but I never did buy one of those things. :)

Now playing: Booker Ervin - Down In The Dumps (Savoy). I found a RVG cut from the late 70s. Record looks unplayed.

The Birdland 1953 set. It’s 3 CDs but I did digital only.

Forgot to mention I also picked up the Sonny Stitt Acid Jazz & Kynard’s Afro-Disiac. Those Prestige sets are pretty cheap and give good reason to comb thru my OJCs and sell em off.

I wonder "Bandcamp Friday" works with downloads like these? I highly doubt that Stitt's estate gets anything from it.

  11. In my experience, a blue screen of death is often an early warning sign that your hard drive is dying. If you want to keep using that machine, there are (free) programs that allow you to clone your existing hard drive onto a new one. I would not necessarily recommend doing that with a Windows 7 machine, but if that's what you have, that's what you clone. I have two backup hard drives with my current Windows 10 system cloned onto them. If my current hard drive dies, I can still get back up & running.

  12. You are right on that. The 95 year expiration is just for video recordings. I was blinded by Steamboat Willie's recent appearance in the PD.

This is what I found for sound recordings:

Recordings first published between 1947-1956 are protected for 110 years. For all remaining recordings first made prior to February 15, 1972, protection shall end on February 15, 2067. Recorded after February 15, 1972, 95 years from publication or 120 years from recording date, whichever is shorter.

    Which is just ridiculous.

How many non-LP tracks are there? I have all of these on various US and Japanese pressings. But I do love Sonny Clark!
