I liked it too. Hope there'll be another season.
"Brothers Sun" was not renewed for a season 2.

Nope. We saw the movie so we won't be watching an extended version of that story. It's the opposite of a "feel good" story.

Man I do love that KD record. I found it as a used Japanese issue CD so I don't know if the sound is extra special good compared to OJC but great tunes. For the thread topic I can only say that Flanagan shows why he was in demand. He fits. He swings. He's part of the magic - but most of it comes from McKinley Dorham.
What I've never been sold on is the title ... its not trumpet fireworks but is "Quiet" really the best adjective? "Quiet" almost implies Blue Hour or Feelin' the Spirit level of ennui (or so I have heard, I don't buy it myself) but this is hard swing at a medium tempo: Percolatin' Kenny!
If you ever come across the XRCD of "Quiet Kenny", I remember it sounding much better than the OJC CD. This XRCD is made in Japan so maybe it has the same mastering as your Japanese CD.

Sounds logical !
Just listened again to that 6CD set again recently. Very enjoyable and the sound is not bad at all. I'm tempted to get the similar Dexter Gordon set.
I dumped both of those sets years ago because I found the sound harsh, which I blamed on the SBM mastering. Maybe with my failing hearing, I could listen to these now.
Barney Wilen with the Mal Waldron Trio - French Story (Pony Canyon UHQCD). I blame Lon for buying this. Years ago, I was not a big fan of Wilen and sold off a bunch, maybe even a few to him, and moved on. Now here I am, probably 25 years later, with 16 Wilen discs in my collection.

Just checked the 6CD Herbie Complete Blue Note box and all of those alternates seem to be included.
I'm pretty sure that is why this CD was released in Japan. The box set had just come out in 1998 & I bet there were Japanese buyers who were not happy that they would have to buy that box if they wanted to hear these alternates. I also think that's why it is so rare. In general, the Japanese buyers don't seem to miss these alternate takes. A lot of Japanese CDs don't add anything to the original LP and they still sell.

Herbie Hancock - Riot (Blue Note Japan). This somewhat rare Japanese CD of alternate takes from several of Herbie's Blue Note sessions was released in 1999 and didn't seem to sit on the shelves for long. All of these alternates have been released on various CDs over the years but I picked this up mainly due to its rarity.

An excellent orchestra. Here is what I have FYI:
LP Masters,Mark Early Start/Jazz Composers Orchestra 1984 Sea Breeze
LP Masters,Mark Silver Threads/Jazz Composers Orchestra 1985-86 Sea Breeze
CD Masters,Mark Mark Masters Jazz Orchestra "Priestess" 1991 Capri Records
CD Masters,Mark Mark Masters Jazz Orchestra 1992 Americatone
Mark Masters is still at it. I have a couple of his more recent CDs, a Gary McFadden tribute, "Wish Me Well" (2006) & an Ellington tribute, "Ellington Saxophone Encounters" (2012). I bought both mainly because they have Gary Smulyan on them but I have no regrets as there is some great playing by all on these two.

One For All at Smoke with special guest George Coleman. It was a great night.

I have a whole lot of Coleman Hawkins on vinyl but I was trying.

I'm a fan of Fresu. Which track is your favorite?
It looks like it's not out until May...
Looking at the recording studio, I am surprised by the solid reflective surfaces all around the band members. Most studios seem to have sound absorbing materials on the walls.

I agree with you though when I spot a nice old classic car or motorcycle in the traffic I am pleased someone saved it from the fog of times.
Old cars & motorcycles are great to look at, no doubt; but in general, they really aren't anywhere near as fun to drive as a modern car, especially those old American boats that cornered like a whale.
And don't get me going on those old Indian motorcycles with the suicide foot clutch, stick shift, left hand throttle advance & right hand spark advance. I don't know how my father ever drove those things.

(BTW I finally put together that you mentioned that you are more or less retired, and you've put your screen name back. So I guess using your name is OK again.)
I left a job where I had to get a clearance and I was told to minimize my social footprint for that. Now that I am no longer in that job, I can go back to using my name.

Kevin: It's entirely you. I posted because I have been getting EA videos on FB and YT feeds, and been struck by much of what he says.
What struck me most is the dissing of "telling a story" and the implicit contrast with Pres. I think that is a legit question for discussion, however it goes. As for the purpose of what he is selling its very clear that this approach, even if geared for "beginners" (which I do not think is his only market anyway) is his approach. So, play changes, don't tell a story.
If you're not looking trying for a negative spin, then why the "rip off George Coleman" comment? I guess in your eyes that's a compliment?
-
Dan - Maybe it's just me, but it seems like you're fishing for some anti-Eric Alexander sentiments here. I don't feel like playing that game.
This video is about a new improv course Alexander is selling to beginners based on his years of teaching the subject. Of course his basic premise is going to be "Play changes", as it is pretty good advice for beginners.

Mezzrow streams their shows too...
-
BTW - on both nights, we tried going to Smalls, which is a block away from Mezzrow, but on both nights, they were completely sold out, even the standing room areas. I guess that's good news for these clubs.
-
I had a blast in New York City these last few days. Maria Schneider's orchestra was phenomenal and I had great seats at Birdland. Afterward, we headed to Mezzrow and saw pianist Wilfie Williams. Mezzrow is a tiny club. I don't know how they make any money in that place as it looks like it has about 35 seats. But at the same time - what a great club! The acoustics are really good and the band is right there, a few feet from us.
Friday night at Smoke with One For All & George Coleman was also a fun time. Again, I had great seats. The club came out of Covid as a "dinner club", which turned out to be a good, albeit expensive thing, as it allowed us to meet the band members before the show. What a great bunch of guys. After the Smoke show (), we again headed down to Mezzrow for Roberta Picket. Unfortunately, this time we got there too late to get seats so we stood in the back, outside the listening room. Acoustics were (obviously) not as good. But what we heard was some great playing, especially by bassist Andy McKee.

Sorry to hear about Bill's passing. As the years fly by, it seems like they get shorter.

I know someone who had to supply Facebook with their photo ID for similar reasons and I think it's safe for you to do this as long as it's truly a Facebook support page. You said you went to Facebook directly and clicked Support? That should be OK. Don't follow any links in any e-mails.
18 minutes ago, Tom 1960 said:Kevin, I received two emails overnight. One said my password had been been changed and the other was my email had been changed. When I do attempt to log in Facebook it does not recognize my password or my email address. I have gone on to their help page to file a report and it asks for my password and doesn't recognize it. One of the options suggested is that I provide a photo ID. Would you do something like that? Do you feel comfortable doing that? Right now, I haven't. I guess one thing I could ask since we are friends is access my account by clicking on my screen name and see what shows up if anything.
This doesn't make sense to me. As I said, I've changed my password recently and I had to enter a code that was e-mailed to me before I could change it. I don't see how this hacker bypassed that feature. Maybe I turned on some sort of added protection at one point?
-
BTW - nothing has been posted to your account since yesterday, so if this person did this for nefarious reasons, they haven't done it yet.
-
This sounds like someone is phishing you. How were you informed that this occurred?
I've never changed my E-mail, but any time I've changed my password, I needed a code e-mailed to me to confirm that I owned that account.

I had several people tell me that Oppenheimer was boring as hell. Once I heard that, I knew it would win big at the Oscars. They love their navel-gazers.

What a coincidence - I just heard this for the first time last night at a local restaurant in Kittery, Maine called The Black Birch. One of the things that makes this tiny restaurant unique is they only play vinyl LPs and the orange vinyl caught my eye.
