In Memory of Jimmy Heath 1-26-2020

4 posts in this topic

After learning of Jimmy Heath’s death, I decided to honor him next week. I hope to include excerpts of my interviews with him, so that may require a second program on the following week.

Timeless Jazz streams live at WUTC.org on Sunday from 3-5 pm ET and repeats on the HD2 station the following Wednesday from 10am to noon.

They just played an excerpt from an interview Phil Schaap did with Heath,24 years ago on WKCR. Some great stories of his times with Miles Bird and Trane.

Heath said he was supposed to do an album with Miles once, but Bird was broke and needed the money, so he let Bird take his place. He asked them to include a tune he just wrote called "The Serpent's Tooth", so they picked up the music from him and recorded it. I don't think he got credit for writing the tune.....Miles stole another tune.!

That Miles...up to his tricks again.

Jimmy Heath did do a date with Miles in 1953, and one of the tunes was Heath's "C.T.A."

More Jimmy Heath will air on February 2, including dates as a sideman, guest and leader, along with excerpts from my September 2011 interview with him.
