Posted 22 Feb 2020 They must have some great talents. I remember in 1989 I was in Praque and there was a festival and it had a competition for young bands and the first price went to a Finnish Group called "Muhallus" or something like that. A young lady played flute.
Posted 23 Feb 2020 Not a great connoisseur of Finnish jazz here. From that list, I very much like mainstream jazz saxophonist and clarinetist Antti Sarpila, owning several of his discs for Arbors and similar labels. As for Edward Vesala, I can only take him in small doses. Some of his ECM stuff I do like, though.
Posted 23 Feb 2020 I find it extraordinary that iro Haarla doesn't appear on the list, for her own work and the mostly uncredited work she did with Vesala's Sound & Fury. I can listen to Vesala, Jone Takamaki and Juhani Aaltonen any day. Bjorkenheim (solo and in Krakatau), Hauta-Aho, Donner, Tapio, Lahti on most days. And from a younger generation Verneri Pohjola and Mikko Innanen are worth a listen too
