Larry Kart
The meeting between Tate and Illinois Jacquet on this 1973 date is special -- intense music-making. Fine band: Roy Eldridge, Mary Lou Williams, Steve Jordan, Milt Hinton, Gus Johnson.
Chuck Nessa
Haven't listened to it in years. Thanks for the prod.
HutchFan
I love that LP. Mary Lou Williams' contributions really elevate the date, IMO.

Postscript: Producer Hank O'Neal relates that Dicky Wells was to be on the date but he fell ill during the recording session and had to be sent home. The number of titles recorded with Wells playing sadly had to be scrapped because, per O'Neal, "there was no way to edit them or mix them as to salvage those tracks on which Dicky appears. This is a pity because the playing around [Wells] is exceptional." I'll bet Chuck could have saved the day.
Hardbopjazz
A while back, I found a copy for sale on Amazon from a library for 2 dollars. It still had the library barcode on the CD. It is a damn good session.
