Claude Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 As the german ZYX CD versions of the 1965 Chet Baker albums on Prestige (Cool brunin', Boppin, etc) sound very poor, I bought one of the three US CDs which compile 70 minutes each. On the "On a misty night" CD, I was surprised that tracks 5-10 are mono, which is unusual for a 1965 recordings and given that the other tracks from the same session are stereo. Can someone tell me which tracks on the two other CDs ("Stairway to the stars", "Lonely star") are mono? CD Universe indicates mono for a few tracks, but for the CD I bought nothing was indicated, so this doesn't seem to be reliable. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1037127 http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1037128 http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1037129 This should be indicated on the back cover under the Prestige logo (e.g. "Stereo AAD #5-10 Mono"). Jim R Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 (edited) Fwiw, I have the 5 K2's. The entire "Boppin" album is mono: (go-go, lament for the living, pot luck, bud's blues, romas, on a misty night). There's also a mono track on "Cool Burnin'" (hurry); and three on "Groovin'" (tan gaugin, cherokee, bevan beeps). Edited April 20, 2006 by Jim R Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 I have Lonely Star. All tracks are stereo with the exception of Tan Gaugin. Quote
Claude Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 Thanks Jim and Chuck. So the info on CD Universe is correct, except for the "On a misty night" CD. Tracks 5-10 on that CD are the "Boppin'" album. Quote
Stereojack Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 Thanks Jim and Chuck. So the info on CD Universe is correct, except for the "On a misty night" CD. Tracks 5-10 on that CD are the "Boppin'" album. I picked up these three CD's when they came out, and was very disappointed that a number of the tracks were mono. All of the original LP's are stereo, so I guess the tapes must have been misplaced at some point. I kept the vinyl, dumped the CD's. Quote
Daniel A Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 I have "Groovin" on LP (Prestige 1960s pressing). The label does not state either "mono" or "stereo"; the entire LP is in fact mono. "Stereo * Stereo * Stereo" etc. is printed on what would have been the top of the front cover, but it's so far up that it ends up upside down at the back of the cover, and is partially hidden under cardboard with the liner notes. Prestige's way of using the same printing machine for mono and stereo covers and just adjusting the cutting, or a way conceal the fact that the album was in fact not stereo? Quote
