JSngry Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Those who like Jeanne Lee might want to check this out. I'm not saying she's "the next Jeanne Lee" or that she's "the heir to Jeanne Lee" or any bullshit like that, but she is working in a vein that will not be uncomfortable for those who were fans of Jeanne Lee. 3 saxes, bass, and the occasional "vocal instrumentalist". Two standards, a few originals, and one improv. Endorsed by Bernard Stollman, fwiw. Jeanne Lee was a giant. Devorah Day is an adventurous young talent. Where she goes from here remains to be seen. But I'm willing to give a listen. This is good stuff. http://www.abatonbookcompany.us/devorahday.html And hey - she might or might not be a flake: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=511 But she sure can sing. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Nope! I think she has a CIMP date out there too? Quote
paul secor Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Nope! I think she has a CIMP date out there too? Yep. Standard - CIMP 299 - duo w. bassist Dominic Duvall. Haven't heard it except for a 1 min. clip on the CIMP website. Quote
chitownjazz Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 (edited) I've heard it, and I agree she's a fine singer, though I'm not much of a fan of singers in general. Also if I recall the saxophone stuff was fairly unusual - and it's certainly a great lineup - Booker T, Marion Brown, was Frank Lowe the third? Edit: Uh, not even close - it is Jorge Sylvester. ep1str0phy Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 This is recent Marion Brown, right? I know he's been through a lot of trauma--how does he sound? Quote

clifford_thornton Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Marion spoke a lot about her when I talked to him. It seems they were very close. She introduced him to Sonny Rollins, strangely enough (or he forgot meeting Sonny in '65). Quote
