    i'm checking out frank rosolino's 'turn me loose' and it sounds very choice. swinging like crazy, his vocals sound fine and not at all distorted. great stereo soundstage with the vocal coming straight down the center lane. highly recommended...

    matzos and meatballs!

    ps: my euro and japanese atlantics are absolutely night and day...

    And what do they offer in exchange? An iphone you can wear on your wrist? That's going to make for some fun in the classroom.

    now that they're being retired, there may well be a relative flood of them hitting ebay and secondhand shops and so on. that should allow you to stock up, hopefully on a steep discount. think of all the ipods that have been sitting around as the iphone has grown to replace it. however, you'll fill your shelves in the "before everyone realizes what they've done" phase (which reminds me of what it must have been like to be a crate digger when the compact disc was introduced).

    What a good idea. I could ramble on about how much better the iPod Classic was compared with .... whatever the most recent format happens to be.

    i find something attractive about the idea of dedicating a unit to a particular thing (say, a label, style, or family of artists). then again, perhaps that defeats the purpose of a variety show under one tent. in any case, i agree. it was dubbed a 'classic' for a reason.

    neither 'layers' nor 'invitation to openness'....? add those.

    Those are interesting albums from Les but I find it difficult to place them as influential. There are, of course, big gaps in my knowledge of jazz and it may be that they had impacts outside soul jazz. I'd be most obliged if you'd say a few things about those two albums.

    both on atlantic, 'invitation' was released in '72 and 'layers' in '73. these two records almost singlehandedly placed the fender and other synth(s) squarely in the center of the presentation and carved some incredible soundscapes.

    a source as relatively clueless and mainstream as amg says this about 'layers';

    This groundbreaking jazz synthesizer record is really unlike any other Les McCann ever made. Aside from a three-man percussion section and electric bassist Jimmy Rowser, Layers is entirely electronic, one of the first jazz albums with such an emphasis.

    and this about 'invitation';

    Label M has reissued the classic 1972 Les McCann album Invitation to Openness on CD with the majority of the tunes receiving the benefit of advanced technology. On this recording, the 26-minute "The Lovers" is more illustrative, freer in its essence and translation of the predominant free love theme of the '60s and '70s. Every nuance of McCann's stream of consciousness comes through loud and clear, as do the excellent solos by Yusef Lateef on a wide array of reeds, flutes, and percussion.

    these two lp's don't adhere to your standard walk-the-bar/jukebox school of r&b cum jazz sessions, but by all means their infulence was far and wide and deserve a place in the collection of any open minded listener interested in an intelligent groove. whether they make any list is kind of irrelevent. if you don't know or haven't heard them, check them out.

    And Shirley Scott's This One's For Me...no bass player, no production artifacts, just Shrirley, Harold Vick, & Billy Higgins. Or does that not fit the bill of "Soul Jazz" per se?

    it's a great record, but i can't see it making the 'important' list next to so many other classics she waxed... then again, imho, every record she made was 'important'. and while we're on it, i'm cuckoo for the crusaders (as well as the jazz crusaders). 'the 2nd crusade' is a golden classic, as is its predecessor.

    wow. remember the interview with gary giddins in which manfred laughs at the ipod and calls it a "toy"? i'm sure this has his complete contempt and displeasure (unless he's done an unlikely 180....).

    on my japanese mini-lp (uccc-9026), it's printed as 'propapacoon'....

    this thread has sent me headlong into a stitt listening session culminating in the mosaic roost sessions box but including about eight or ten other titles. what a joy the past day has been - not a single imperfect note!

    Finally, unexpected though this may be, Argo 629 is the superior album IMO, one of the best Stitt ever made.

    that would make for a wonderful conversation. personally, i think there are a *lot* of high points in his discography. i think 'stitt plays bird' gives 629 a run for its money.

    up next is one i haven't heard in ages; 'salt and pepper' with paul gonsalves.

    never received an answer to my question about the 'take off' set, but....

    a new batch of shm's in this series has been announced for a 10/22 release. they begin with the catalog number UCCQ-5033 which is byrd's 'fuego'. the remainder of the releases are certainly in that well worn path of previously available. 'merry ole soul' being the most unusual of the lot. sorry for the somewhat incomplete info - i'm out of town and running between here and there.
