  1. Film director Bernard Tavernier must have thought it sounded like a jazz guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_Midnight_(film)
  2. Dave McKenna Melissa Aldana or Nicole Glover?
  3. Foster Eric Alexander or Grant Stewart?
  4. Freddie Green
  5. Lockjaw Stitt Joe Magnarelli or Jim Rotondi?
  6. John Abercrombie Ray Nance Earl Hines
  7. Al Cohn Phil Woods Jimmy Heath Tommy Dorsey Wardell Gray Renee Rosnes or Jeb Patton?
  8. Hank Mobley
  9. Hodges Buck Clayton Harry Edison Buddy Tate
  10. Rosolino's my top bone man (along with J J.)
  11. Victor every time!
  12. Chaloff Ronnie Cuber or Gary Smulyan?
  13. Those links also brought us Joe Harriott, Harold McNair and (for a while) Dizzy Reece.
  14. The only time I saw Kenny was very early in his career - in 1962 in a club in Leeds when he appeared with fellow Canadian Art Ellefson in a sextet of Dankworth sidemen led by Eddie Harvey.
  15. IIRC the notes to Bird with the Herd (live recording made in Kansas City) say that he always cleaned up when going to visit his mother, as on this occasion, which results in his being on brilliant form. (Yes, he's on brilliant form - can't vouch for the rest.) The only recordings when he obviously isn't in full possession of his faculties are the 1946 "Lover Man" session and, to a lesser extent, Charlie Parker Plays Cole Porter, when he had a very short time left to live.
  16. Hank Jones Joe Farnsworth or Kenny Washington?
  17. Randy Weston Scott Hamilton or Harry Allen?
  18. I'll say Criss, if only because he's more into my sort of jazz than McPherson. I was tempted to ask Albert Ammons or Meade Lux Lewis, but fearing the "unfamiliar" plea, I'll change it to: Griff or Jaws.
  19. (Victor's finest hour!) Now playing: I like that vintage price tag! And the music as well, of course.
  20. Harold would be the man for me. Continuing the West Coast theme: Bud Shank or Herb Geller?
