  1. In the US don't you conclude university studies with something called "commencement"? Over here it's simply called "graduation".
  2. Harry Carney every time.
  3. These are my answers to: Leo Parker or Cecil Payne Eddie Higgins or Jodie Christian
  4. Cecil Payne Jodie Christian
  5. Don't miss this one!
  6. Bob Cranshaw Nat Hentoff or Ira Gitler?
  7. Paul Gonsalves, Gettin' Together (1960) with Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb
  8. It was seeing them live that won me over to Dunlop.
  9. Memphis Slim Harpo Marx & Spencer Tracey Emin
  10. Davis First Quintet Frankie Dunlop or Ben Riley in the Monk Quartet?
  11. Trombone Shorty Rogers & Hart Crane
  12. Yes (Philly Gumbo) Now playing: Yeah to that.
  13. I haven't listened to the Stones for years either, but in 1964, when I was 24 and had been a confirmed jazz listener for 7 years, the choice was between the Beatles and the Stones and the Stones won hands down. As is shown by my occasional choices in the "What are you listening ..." thread, I retain my enthusiasm for Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc who were worshipped by the Stones in those days. I used to hang out with a Leeds blues band called the Blue Sounds who got to play at the Cavern in Liverpool, but never made the big time like the others. Their keyboardist, the late Paul Woodrow, was invited to sit in by a blues band at the Flamingo in London, but the singer said no. The singer was Jagger. This was the Stones before they hit the big time.
  14. Re early recordings, I think the biggest change would be heard in Scott Hamilton, who at the age of 66 has had a much longer career than the others, and whose influences sound to have moved from Ben Webster to Zoot Sims over the years.
  15. Studio Mingus Dameron or Silver as composers?
  16. Great DiRubbo quartet session last night at Smalls. From his recording history looks like he's had a long association with last night's sidemen, Rudy Royston and Brian Charette.
  17. Perkins Didn't like Timmons when he emerged. Used to the complex Powell message, it all seemed too much of a simplification to me. Hear a bit more nowadays of what he was doing. Kenny Drew or Sonny Clark?
  18. I think Scottie deserves a leader date and something more recent than 36 years ago! How about: or: This probably my favourite Grant Stewart leader date: And here he is in other excellent company:
  19. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/aug/25/beat-lighting-man-exploring-charlie-watts-love-of-jazz Guardian article on Charlie Watts and jazz with audio clip of a Watts jazz quintet. IMHO you can tell Charlie isn't a full-time jazz drummer, though he certainly has the right idea! Lovely quintet they put together for him, with Peter King, Gerald Presencer and Brian Lemon.
  20. Cupla close calls. Tardo or Hod?
  21. I last saw Peter Ind in 1984 at a concert at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. Old Tristano-ite friends in the rhythm section: Peter, Al Levitt and Dave Cliff, but a very different front line: Jimmy Deuchar, Slide Hampton and Johnny Griffin. Great session!
  22. Junior Wells Lightning Hopkins or John Lee Hooker?
