I don't think "how" is flat out wrong. It would sound OK if you were emphasising the manner or method of doing something, so that "how" = "in the same way as".

That sounds interesting! I saw Chris McGregor and the Blue Notes in a room over a pub in Leeds in the sixties. I'll never forget the diminutive, but supercharged, trumpeter and altoist!

"Please do it exactly as we did (it) last time" is a little more formal than "Please do it exactly like we did (it) last time". "Please do it exactly how we did (it) last time" sounds strange to me, but you never know - in another part of the English-speaking world .... (No need to repeat the "it", by the way.)
