  1. Indeed he did! Love his firm comping behind Fats Navarro and Howard McGhee on the "Double Take" session on The Fabulous Fats Navarro Blue Note album. On Kenny Clarke's Telefunken Blues album Bags is on piano (including solos) for four tracks, together with Basieites Henry Coker, Frank Wess, Charlie Fowlkes and Eddie Jones.
  2. Is one of them David Cameron? Maybe the one at the far right on the top step. Yes, Cameron's in the picture, but he's second from the left, back row. Front row on the right is Boris Johnson, now Mayor of London. He hasn't changed much! Here's the story behind the group photo: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/camerons-cronies-the-bullingdon-clubs-class-of-87-436192.html
  3. I recently read a biography of Klook and recall that vibes was a big thing with him in his early days, but that he gave up in the face of Bags' superior talent. (They were together in the Gillespie outfit, of course.) People interviewed for the book ascribed Klook's "understanding" as a drummer to what was going on to his ability to play other instruments, vibes included.
  4. Probably the former. Only 2 or 3 years ago, BBC TV seemed to have at least some commitment to jazz ( at least BBC 4 did ) and showed several jazz-based documentaries, things like the rare Jazz Goes to College Stan Getz programme and restored episodes from Jazz 625. Then it all stopped - when did you last see jazz on the BBC? BBC 4 does at least seem to have some interest in music programming, mainly rock, so I assume that whoever was promoting jazz in the organisation has moved on or left. All this has happened since the passing of Humphrey Lyttelton (see post #23).
  5. Recognize anyone here? (Brits not allowed to answer.)
  6. The Clintons.
  7. Really like that one!
  8. Difference of opinion here, I see. I'm hugely enthusiastic about both Basie and Holman, but together I don't think it works out, though I concede the album does have a very high reputation. I feel completely happy about Basie and Nestico on the other hand, and have four of their albums. Hope you like that combination, John.

  10. The BBC is largely paid for through the television licence fee which costs about $230 a year. It's technically possible to escape the fee by not owning a television set and just listening to radio, though I don't know anyone in this position!
