  1. Just read the book for the first time, as opposed to seeing the film. Very revealing: written at the same time as the film was made, this is what Wikipedia says about it: "The film contains little explanation for the events taking place. Clarke, on the other hand, wrote thorough explanations of "cause and effect" for the events in the novel."

  9. One of the most frustrating things - and it happens to me all the time - is not to be able to put a name to a tune you know - and I know hundreds - or is it thousands? I can sometimes get there by identifying the sort of music; this may lead to the artist and that may lead to the title. (Sorry this doesn't answer your question on Monk. )

  11. Don't groan, but I think the word "postmodernism," nicely covers what's going on in our times in all the arts, whether it be pop, jazz, film, dress, literature, architecture or whatever. No longer do we have the avant garde striving for something new which will outdate the last thing (consider the career of John Coltrane); now it's a case of making new things by delving into the rich selection which the past offers us (consider Alan Barnes's music). Academic analysis of past forms (in the case of the popular arts largely ignored by academia formerly) is also part of the phenomenon and currently under discussion in another thread in relation to jazz.
