  2. Have a great one, Ubu!
  3. In the UK most people are on the "pay as you earn" (PAYE) system. Income tax is deducted from your monthly or weekly pay before you get it and sent to the revenue by the employer. If you're self-employed you have to make an annual tax return.

  7. Just saw Pete Cater with the SwingShift Big Band at Southport. Pete certainly does the Buddy Rich thing pretty well, but I much prefer the Bill Holman charts to Buddy's Beatle borrowings!

  9. Yes, looks like he's heading in the right direction - and he's not even paying for it, as hard-strapped British taxpayers are! Time we were a republic like you people over there! (If there are any monarchists left, they're not going to be posting on a board like this.)

  12. Good local interest link in there, which will interest fellow Mancunian Richard Davenport when he logs on: http://www.recordshopcity.co.uk/ Interesting to read that used discs may be the way forward. If a used disc is cheaper, then I'll buy it. I've never received anything in a condition I'd consider unacceptable and sometimes used discs can have extra character; e.g. a sticker from Cheapo Cheapo Records or a stamp reading "Withdrawn from free use in city cultural and welfare instutions. May be sold for the benefit of the Brooklyn Public Library"(!) I've found some great things used recently on Amazon marketplace - and at appropriate prices, too. Particularly good has been an outfit called Zoverstocks, which I think is one of those controversial Guernsey-based firms. They're probably riding the tide of the recession, catering for broke punters like me!
  13. A very good show for me, as very little of it was in my collection - the Miles, of course, as well as the Dizzy from Have Trumpet, Will Excite! (Saw the Dizzy group, too! )
  14. Jazz Record Requests from BBC Radio 3 Great show this week! The opener, Tubby Hayes playing "Dance of the Aerophragytes" (just a blues, actually) in 1955 at the age of 20, was a revelation to me. Hadn't heard him before he developed the capacity to run all over the horn, so what we had was a beautiful Bird distillation.

  21. Didn't know Bobby Shew had that condition, but it makes sense of his very restrained performance at Wigan last summer. Great music, though! P.S. No altitude problem at Wigan pier!
