  1. So you didn't like "This Land" or "Have A Little Faith"? How about "Where In The World?"
  2. I agree with this to a certain point, but it's hard to deny the how great "Have A Little Faith" and "This Land" was, which for me, was Frisell's shining moment as an improviser, song interpreter, and composer.
  3. "Where In The World?" is the pinnacle Frisell recording for me. It was also what turned me onto his music. Great band too: Hank Roberts, Joey Baron, and Kermit Driscoll. This album is weird, dark, disturbing, eerie, and haunting. This is music I dream about.
  4. I heard "Irrational Numbers" was really good. I'm not sure how each of these albums measure up to each other, but I'm sure both are good since they have the musicians on each of them.
  5. My favorite Frisell albums as a leader are in this order: "Where In The World?" "Have A Little Faith," and "This Land."
  6. Well, Berne is certainly more ... I don't know if "lyrical" is the right word, but more melodic than certainly I'm used to from him. I'd say the writing is the thing with these albums, more than fine musicians showing off their chops. I recall these as well-crafted albums. I'm not super familiar with Alessi, but shaking the old memory banks, I'd say he follows the writing here in the same way. Gonna cue up butterflies now. I'll weigh in a little more later. Alright very cool...thanks for the feedback!
  7. Yep. Got 'em both. Been a little while since I've spun either, but both are very nice albums. Inside/outside with nice grooves and top-notch playing all around. Cohesive and thoughtful albums, both. Think I'll cue them up soon. Thanks for the response. Would you say that these albums contain some of the best playing from these musicians? I know Ralph Alessi is a good trumpeter. How does he do on the album?
  8. Yeah, they're really good. I think my favorite Motian albums with Frisell and Lovano are the "On Broadway" recordings and "It Should've Happened A Long Time Ago." Changing gears I also liked Frisell's work on Joey Baron's albums, especially "We'll Soon Find Out." I also was a big fan of Kenny Wheeler's "Angel Song." So many good ones....
  9. I couldn't find a topic on these two albums by Drew Gress, but I was curious have any of you heard these two recordings? I heard they have a good cast of musicians: Craig Taborn on piano, Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Tim Berne on alto saxophone, Tom Rainey on drums, and Gress on bass. Sounds very intriguing, because I'm quite familiar with all of these musicians' work.
  10. I tend to find Frisell's work from 1994 and back to be his most exciting or at least for me anyway. I mean he rarely shows that more adventurous side anymore. The only thing I've heard him do recently that I really enjoyed was Paul Motian's "I Have The Room Above Her." Paul Motian seems to always bring out the best qualities in him. Frisell is an outstanding leader in his own right, but his session work is just fantastic. That said "History, Mystery" was a pretty good Frisell release, but I find more a lot more substance in his older releases.
  11. All of the whining the movie actress or tennis actress does will turn into passion into time. I have found out that if anyone spends enough time with they end up loving me. At first I might seem a bit of a smartass, but that cynism draws them in like honey does a bear.
  12. I wouldn't mind being stranded with tennis phenom: Ana Ivanovic
  13. Well the title of this thread was "If I Have To Be Stranded On A Desert Island..." Since this is obviously fantasy, I felt inclined to use my imagination and try and picture who I would like to be stranded on an island with. Dumpy Mama, I sit around with friends all the time talking about how beautiful this woman was or that woman was. It's an innocent thing that I like to do. So Dumpy you never sat around and a beautiful woman walks by and you say to your friends "Whoah...did you see her?" I mean it's second nature for me to look at beautiful women, that's apart of my DNA. I don't even think about it. I'm always looking. I think it's dumb and pointless to talk about celebrities and what actress is hotter than the other, but it's alot of fun to talk about how beautiful and hot women are and who you like to see in a bikini and what not. Again, it's innocent and I don't see any harm in it at all. Don't go up to a woman and tell her that you would like see her in bikini, because you might get slapped, but when you're talking to other guys it's only natural to talk about women, especially if your single, but hey even married men talk about women. It's just apart of our DNA.
  14. I would also like to add that Evangeline Lily would be fun to be stranded on an island with, because she's already been LOST on the ABC tv show for so long now. She probably could show me around the island.
  15. Since we're in a time machine I would pick-up these ladies too: Raquel Welch Lauren Hutton Gene Tierney Betty Grable Ava Gardner Lauren Bacall
  16. I can imagine my conversation: Me: Uh, um ... gabbledeegook schlupity culdmecheck gabblegarf ... heh hem. I mean, ah, gloshgibberish shleck de moishy moo? Kate: help? Well that's what I said I would say, but in reality it would probably be closer to the language you were trying to speak.
  17. If I had a time machine, then Grace Kelly would be my woman:
  18. If I had to pick someone, then I wouldn't mind being stranded with this lovely lady: KATE BECKINSALE I can just imagine the conversation now: "So Kate, you like Thelonious Monk?" I asked "Why yes I do, I love Monk!" answered Kate "Wow, okay....will you marry me, Kate?" I questioned "Well since we're stranded on this desert island, I don't see why not!" said Kate "YES!!!!!!" I exclaimed
  19. Who cares what Stanley Crouch thinks? He's a no talent, waste of human space. Why would I care what a jazz critic thinks of a jazz musician? I don't care. I'm musician and the only critic I need is myself. I know whether or not I did good or bad and I don't need somebody pointing out my obvious mistakes that I know I made. I don't need any "pointers" from a pompous, egotistical, fat ass, know-it-all who plays backgammon every Tuesday with the Marsalis brothers.
  20. Well, I've owned several cats, and I've never had a boyfriend. But I draw the line at tori amos... Well there's always going to be criticism when dealing with art, but I thought Sandman was a brilliantly written series even if it was a comic. It's some of the best damn comic books I've ever read.
  21. As with anything, you're going to get tired of it I think, but if you take it a little at a time, it's a wonderful read.
  22. I really like the series. I don't read it all the time and I'm actually still reading the series, but I thought it is a very imaginative story. Granted, it's not for everyone, but I really have liked what I have read so far.
